silverstar.
I drive to work in the early morning on poorly lit roads. They do pretty good. Not as good as HID's, but not bad for a 13 year old Taurus. Non-fogged up headlights helped a lot as well.

Best thing I ever did for gen 3 headlights was upgrade the wiring harness and install Silverstars. There are aftermarket HID kits out there that several people love, I've never had the money or desire for them though.

I have some type of hyper white light bilbs in my car. I forget what kind. The factory lights didn't light up anything and these bulbs I have now still suck. I leave my brights on whenever I drive. Noone ever flashes their lights at me either.

Lol.. that probably isn't a good thing.

I have Silverstar Ultra's with a SUV Headlight harness installed. I have to say, I didn't really see much difference in the low's, but the high's presented a much greater distance.

If you are looking for real performance lighting, HID is definitely the way to go.

silverstars w/ harness. no aftermarket fog/driving lights on my rig.
also, tilt/adjust them to point higher.
finally, get new housings with nice, clear lenses (not weather beaten or yellow)
it's a cheap fix/mod that you will really enjoy

Just refinished the lenses on my GenIII. I never changed out the bulbs. They are brighter than they were due to the clarity of the new housing, but still cannot see a couple hundred feet with the high beams on. I just put 4300K HID's in the fogs of my Expedition. I really liek them, so I bought a set for the SHO to put in the headlights. Still waiting for them to arrive. Bought new harnesses, too. I hate that the light is not focused, and if I don;t like it, I will just replace it with Silver Star. That's what's in the hi/lo on my Expo.

I'm running HID's out of a 350Z, It's the best setup I found after playing with a different couple brands of light bulbs. But it's not as focused as I'd like. I'm working on trying to convert to projector.

Not sure how to get pics up here. The HID's are bright, but not as bright ans scattered as I thought. I purchased SilverStar to put in just in case I did not like the HID. I have seen quite a few HID where the light is so scattered you just blind everybody. I HATE THAT! I aimed my lights down a little bit. It has 5K bulbs in them, so juts a hint of blue, which I wanted pure white 4300K, but could not get them. And 3K are yellow. I have not been driving the car due to a failed alternator, so once again, it's back on the lift. I'm beginning to spend more time fixing my dd than actually driving it...

i keep hearing about harnesses...what exactly is entailed in upgrading the harness? is it a plug-and-play type of thing or is it rather involved? i'd love to get a bit more output from both my SHOs.

I just bought the ends at Auto ZOne. The harness is the plug the goes directly into the headlight socket. Over time, the plastic housing, the shielding on the wire, and the metal pins get brittle. The heat up and you lose output through them. The harness comes with about 12" of wire. You cut the old plug off and solder on the new harness. I add an additional 12" to my harnesses, just to make sure I get off as much old wire as I can. On this car, the harness was much beefier than stock. Dab a little electrical grease and you are good to go. I did mine at the same time as HID, so not sure how much it improved the old bulbs.

Plug and play for the most part. You need to add an inline fuse and scrounge up some grounds at the headlights. Usually the harness comes with the relays and plug in connectors all together. I have one if you are interested.
