There is a '95 MTX with 130k on the engine available locally. He's selling the car for $700. But he says that the head gasket needs replaced. Is this a major undertaking?

While head gaskets do fail on the SHO engine, they're somewhat rare.

You might want to dig deeper and find out what lead to that diagnosis.

For $700 I'd buy it ANYWAY!!! A 95 MTX in any condition bad or good is tops on my list...but only if it's NOT green. If I were you I'd still dig deep, but keep in mind that it is an MTX.mmmmmm Keep us posted on what ya do. If you don't buy it, I'm dead on it.

Once the intake and valve covers are taken off, the head removal isn't really too difficult beyond that, but will take awhile. You just want to make sure that you have the heads checked to make sure they are not warped. You also want to make sure that timing is correct when putting the heads back on. For $700 I'd hop on that quicker than Michael Jackson on a little boy. :D

What's wrong with the "rare" green SHO?
Bro, I've got 3 SHO's (2 running and 1 parts) and they're ALL green. Yuk!! It's a good looking color but WHY did they make SOOOO many of them. Damn!!

That was a low blow, but I'll let that one slide cause I'm not in my "Defend the King of Pop like a Bitch" mode.

sunny San Juan Bautista,
Just keep in mind that a 3.0 liter head gasket set might be hard to come by since it's been discontinued. They occasionally pop up on ebay. Anybody know if there's an aftermarket source of new 3.0 head gaskets (besides getting a custom copper gasket made)?

This is another thing in favor of doing a 3.2 upgrade, whether a swap from an ATX or boring out the 3.0 to 3.2: The 3.2 head gasket sets are still available.
