Another 85 degree day here :p Ok, so I did a search and didn't exactly find what I was looking for. I just bought this car, and found out that it will grind when going into second only when the car is cold. After it warms up it will stop. The previous owner had the clutch replaced last January but didn't remember if the fluid was replaced. Question is will the GM syncromesh fluid help prevent the grinding of second at all? I would like to replace the fluid anyways. One more question, how many quarts will the tranny hold if I drain it through the shift interlock bolt that Scott talks about?

First off only click the button once. Now that's out of the way i think you need new blocking rings for 1-2 gear :( . Changing the fluid is a good idea and i would do that before rebuilding the tranny. I think you are in need of a rebuild. Good luck and while you have the tranny out install a LSD.

It might hold up to 3 quarts draiing it through the shift interlock bolt. If you do that though, don't shift the gears any or it will be like stuck. I played with it when my tranny was a part and understand prett much why and if it does get put in another gear or so, it'll take some time to mess with it and get it right again with the tranny still installed. Have you checked your fluid? ou know where to fill it up when you drain it, right?

Your blocking rings and/or synchros are worn. There is nothing that you can add that will "fix" it. You may be able to mask it for a while, but only new parts will make the problem go away.

I know the only way to fix it is to replace the damaged parts but I just got the car, I don't intend of rebuilding the transmission at all, second gear is the only problem and I'm not too worried about it. I just wanted some advice from people who maybe had the same problem and found a way to keep it from grinding so much. Anybody?

Try the Lucas tranny additive, it works pretty good. I never felt the shifts from the synchromesh, so I can't compare the differences. Don't let it grind or you will be having to look for a good (used) 1/2 synchro assembly as they don't make them any more. However if it grinds badly, the Lucas will NOT help it as it didn't in my old tranny (MTX). It just helps the hard shifting from blocking rings with little wear, but not badly.

I have noticed lately that my 4-5 upshift feels kinda rough. The best way to describe it is that it feels like the tranny fluid has no viscosity during this shift. I did run it a bit low on fluid for a few miles, not more than a half qt though.
