I looked at the Halfshaft replacement guide on shophoenixproject.com and it all seem to be straight forward but I just need to replace the boot on the shaft and not the whole shaft. How to i get the old boot off and the new one on to the shaft?

If you're on a budget and only want to replace the boot, that's possible, too.

Getting the old boot off is trivial, just cut it open and pull it off the shaft. ;)

You do need to remove the shaft from the car, and once it's out put the shaft in a vise (gently, use some aluminum or some rags or something to keep from distorting the shaft). A good whack will pop the CV off the shaft so that you can put the new boot on. One method is to put the hub nut and washer on the shaft over a big box-end wrench, and then whack the wrench against the washer and nut. A brass punch against the star portion of the CV works well also.

Be sure to get a good quantity of grease in there before buttoning the whole thing back up. If the old unit didn't eject much grease just scoop it out when you start and put it back when you're done. If it did lose the grease and it ran that way for very long I'd consider replacing the shaft.

The boot is ripped all the way around and there was grease all over the inner wheel, but there still seems to be a good portion of grease in the boot.
