This is probably old news by now. But just for grins & giggles and for the Mass. Gen 1 / Gen 2 owners that may not have caught it on the news yet.... according to Chan. 5 WCVB, vehicles 1995 and older are now emissions exempt in Mass. Unfortunatly '96 and newer vehicles have to pass emissions every year at the annual state inspection. Now if they would just suspend the fuel and cigarette tax.....:)

Funny thing with my '89, never had a problem in the 4-5 years I've owned it passing emissions. I hate to admit it but I've never (yet) done anything major to the '92 JY engine, never even had the plugs out. They do look at the car a little strange, but its street legal. Although the first year they gave me a hassle because the car had no rear seat belts, they finally accepted my argument that the car had no rear seat.
I'll see what happens next spring when I go to get the ole girl re-stickered.:)

Really? Is this true?

Cool, let me ask the inspection stickers experts a question then.

I bought my 93 SHO last year, and got it inspected, of course they did safety and emissions. Now I'm due for another inspection. Am I correct to assume all they will inspect is safety?

I'm not sure on the time line, quick call to your favorite inspection station should get you a response to your question though. Don't recall an effective date being mentioned.

Emissions used to be every other but now only cars with an OBD port get tested. Now since most cars that have OBD are usually 96 and up (there are a few 95 cars with it) the gen 1-2 owners are exempt. But if the car was equipped with cats from the factory something resembling them needs to be in place. Just make sure all the safety items are in order ie:suspension, tires, lights, wiper blades, body rot etc. because they will be looking at those older cars with a sharper eye.

i need a sticker for my Dodge this month, can you help????

as far as the new standards go,this was something new the state just implicated at the beginning of this month.not only are the emission standards a little different but now they are going as far as videotaping every test, and from what i understand the inspector gets a retina(or something close to it)scan to verify that a licencsed inspector is doing the test. This along with making sure all your door and windows function, and there can be NO lights on in the dash whatsoever(i.e. Air Bag,ABS,etc)...i just feel bad for all the shops that spend the 20 or so grand on the dyno's that are now giant paperweights...

We should all be happy we don't have the "Shaken" compliance requirements they have in Japan. I'm sure 1/3 of the cars on the road would be scrapped.
What is shaken?

It's a mandatory vehicle inspection check that you must perform on your car. If you do not perform an inspection on your car, your car cannot be driven. New cars will not need an inspection until the car is 3 years old. For older cars, it needs to be done every 2 years.

When the shaken inspection is being performed, your car may be subject to repairs to keep the car in good shape. The shaken test checks exhaust emissions, speedometer calibration, tires, lights and indicators, oil leaks, brakes etc. Everything on the car must work. Everything.

It can get very expensive. While shaken is expensive, it does keep your car in good working condition and you will less likely have breakdowns. As the car gets older, the cost of shaken becomes more expensive.
There are three taxes you should be aware of when you own an automobile in Japan. They are:

1) Car Tax - The owner of a car is taxed every year on April 1. The tax amount is decided by the size of the engine displacement and the purpose of the car's use.
2) Car Weight Tax - When your car goes through the mandatory automobile inspection, tax is charged according to the weight of the car. You have to pay the tax at the time of registration, and when you have a compulsory automobile inspection.
3) Car Acquisition Tax - Regardless of whether the car is new or second-hand, you will be charged this tax when you buy a car. You have to pay the tax when you register the car.
Can you imagine all of that in your state?

Actually, in MA we pretty much have 2 of those.
Every year, we receive an "excise tax" on each vehicle we own. This is usually in the first quarter of the year and you have 30 days to pay it. This tax is based on a sliding scale- as the vehicle ages, the amount of the excise tax is reduced. When I bought a new Saab 9-2x wagon in 2005, the excise tax bill was over $400 for the first and second year. This year, it was down around the $250 mark IIRC.

We also have to pay sales tax to the Registry of Motor Vehicles whenever we purchase and register a car- no matter if it is 1 year old or 30 years old. The tax was previously based on the actual sale value that you paid (marked on the title & paperwork), but they have since revised this. Now, you pay a 5% sales tax based on the current Book Value of the vehicle.
