Bob Gervais (TCCA) and I (Don Mallinson, SHO Club) are trying again to put together a track day for you track dogs out there.

Right now we can get a FRIDAY date on Oct 22nd at Gingerman. fun safe track located at South Haven, MI just off I-196, about 60 miles from the illinois/Indiana/Michigan border.

If we get 20 cars we can do our own private track day for about $155 per car. If we get 30 cars, it can be $105. I could toss in a BBQ lunch for that also.

THIRTY CAR LIMIT!

We would then be able to make a fairly easy 3 hour drive to Ron Porter's area on the north side of Detroit and meet up with the Lapier drag group for the friday night get together before Saturday drag racing at Lapier. (Note: Lapier expenses/drag strip are NOT included in the price of the Gingerman event!)

In order to do this, we MUST have firm commitments from at least 15-20 people soon, and full payment in advance before the end of this month, August, 2004.

We will have a novice class along with one or two classes for experienced drivers.

Any car is welcome, I am sure a few of my SVT friends from the Peoria area may come, and we may have a Porsche or even a Ferrari!

Last BLAST of track fun for the year!

Let's put this one together, spread the word, get back to me if you can make it. Plaase let me know ASAP so I can gauge if this event can be a GO. If you are only 10-20% sure, don't reply until you are 90% sure please.

I you want to go ahead and send a check for $155 now, to secure a spot, we can refund the proper amount if we get over 20 cars. If the event falls through, I will send your check back. Need to know by the end of August!

Make your check payable to: Prairie-Sage Ent., Inc.

Mail to:

Don Mallinson
attn: Gingerman event
902 S. Main St.
Washington, IL 61571

your check won't be cashed till Sept 1st at the earliest, so if you want to date it for that day, that would be fine.

If you need to pay by credit card, there will be a $10 extra fee for the credit card charges.

To summarize:

Event: Track Lapping/driver education day, Typical SHO Club track rules apply. 18 or older to drive. 16 or older to ride. Everyone must have a Helmet, SA95 Snell or better. Instructors will not be provided, but help for novice drivers will be available on a limited basis.

DATE: Oct 22nd, Friday, 8am to 4pm

Location: Gingerman Raceway, Southaven MI.

Cost: $155 per driver maximum, $less if we get more than 20 drivers. Send check for $155 per driver and we will refund appropriate amount if we get more than 20 drivers. (30 max allowed)

Track Web Site: http://www.gingermanraceway.com

Hotels: Several available, we are recommending the Hampton Inn 269-639-8550 with pool, free breakfast and event rate of $71 plus taxes, just mention Gingerman Raceway when making reservations. Other hotels listed on the Gingerman site, or call the Southhaven visitors bureau (also listed on the Gingerman site).

Should be a fun weekend.

Don, most of the people online here use Paypal to transfer funds online, rather than sending checks or calling with a credit card. FYI. You typically add a 3% surcharge onto the cost (in this case, about $5 for the $155). That means they can commit instantly online, and save the $5 over calling with a card.

Something to think about as far as payment processing & getting people on a budget to signup.

I'm sending in my check this week.

Fred,

I understand, but I am not a fan of PayPal for business purposes. I already am set up to accept credit cards, and most people that would go to these events should have credit cards, and most have a checking account.

The problem with PayPal and credit cards is that you pay the up front fee, even if you give a refund later. With a Check, I can hold them till I know the event is a go, then cash, or send them back without a penny having been taken out or spent (other than the few cents for the actual check and a stamp.) $7 fee or more for PayPal or credit cards, or less than a buck for a check.

Anyway, the set-up for this event is done, and it would be bad to change halfway through.

on another note. we will soon have forms posted for those attending. Rules, medical form etc. Everyone watch for these and have them with you at the track.

Understood, no biggie, was just trying to illustrate a point.

Remember the age group of the current SHO ownership majority... likely 17-25 guys in high school / college. Online payment is a much bigger deal today than it was 2 years ago.

Anyway, hope the turnout's good. For those who want a comparison... I just ran one day at New Hampshire International's road course. There were about 75-100 cars, and we paid $235 per person, and you would sometimes get stuck in traffic, reducing the fun level some. With the number of people we're talking about, that's going to be a LOT more track time, and a LOT less traffic, for an already lower price. Can't beat it.

Thanks for organizing this Don.

Can we rent/borrow/buy/beg/steal helmets at the track? Is there a list of the amount of people going? Can't say I'm 90% so I won't say anything at this point...but I am very interested since this is in my part of the US.

helmet rental?

The track says that they have three helmets of different sizes that they will loan out (no charge).

Personally, I think the investment of under $200 to have your own clean and properly fitting helmet is something anyone should do that is going to attend any of these events, but I do understand having to budget and prioritize where cash goes.

Also some people may let you borrow theirs. But I consider that too personal of an item to loan out myself.

A good place to shop for helmets is:

http://www.racerwholesale.com

They have open face SA2000 helmets for $149, and full face or modified full face (like the pit people wear) for under $200.

Be sure to get SA, NOT M certification. M is for Motorcycle and does not have the flame retardant lining that the SA helmet does. They figure that you aren't going to be caught inside a fireball on a motorcycle!

SO SA2000 Snell certified is the ONLY helmet to buy. The cheapies at K-Mart etc that are "DOT" certified won't pass inspection at any SHO event or almost any other event you are likely to attend including SCCA autocross.

Only about another week and a half to get in registrations so we can make sure this event happens! Don't delay if you plan on going!

What else should I bring in preparation for a day at the track? How easily do brakes fry at these? I'd really like to do this, however I'd just like to know what to anticipate and bring with me?

People going will be bringing tools, so whatever you forget to bring in that regard, someone will likely have that you can borrow.

Brake pads are a good idea, just in case. If you start the day with a new set, 99.9% sure you'll make it home ok on that same set. Bring your bleeder kit if you have one and some fresh fluid. Make sure you have your battery tied down and no fluid leaks. The car needs to be emptied before you get out on the track, so anything extraneous can either be left home, or emptied at the track. A small tarp in case it rains to protect the stuff you emptied out is a smart idea (one I've yet to master myself... blankets don't really do a good job shielding from rain...).

Alright, I'm gonna do this! I had so much fun at the dragstip today and cruising the twisties to get to it I want to try out a course now. I'll get a check out this week. I have a big tool tote that I've been carrying in the Kia for my wrenchwork for hire, I'll bring that, and the spare brake stuff, or heck maybe a brake upgrade kit hehehe :D

almost too late!

WE are still at least 10 people shy of making the minimum for this event.

If you are procrastinating, understand that I have to either give up the date or send in a chunk of change the first of next month, thus the end of August deadline.

I can't accept an e-mail saying "I'll be there".

So if you plan on going, get a check in today.

Thanks to those that have responded, I really want this track day to happen, but can't make it fly with just 10 people.

Don, can you do it with a price increase? I had another event cancel out on me (Summit Point 10-29), so the funds I would have used for hotel, etc. might be freed up if I can't reschedule to something that fits well.

I've also been trying to recruit non-SHO folk. Would it be ok to open it up to another organization?

Probably a go

Right now, if everyone sends in a check that says they did, we should make it it close enough that I can send in the deposit and give people a couple more weeks.

Go ahead and send the check, as I say, if it doesn't happen, you get the check back, if it does, then you are in!

Thanks, and yes, spread the word, if we get more than 20 we can cut the cost for everyone.

If appropriate, can you post a listing of signed-up / paid (received)?

I listed the event on the NESHOC website events page today Don, in hopes it would happen. I also got permission from Ian Prout to mention it at the driver's meeting at New Hampshire International on Sept. 27th, but that's a way out yet. Let me know if attendance is to be capped before then if you could.

those attending so far

Those signed up so far (eleven):

John Cook
John Hrinsin
Fred Hurder
David Kegel
Mike Langley
Don Mallinson
Don Jr. Mallinson
Ken Mallinson
Kurt Metros
Paul Nimz
Kenyon Wurster

Should be at least another 2-3 in the next day or so, if everyone sends in a check that said they would.

If I don't have your check in hand, you are NOT signed up for the event!

If you sent a check several days ago (this is being written Aug 31) and aren't listed here, let me know.
