I would guess the gen3 takes the gen2 off the line, but hte gen2 starts pulling on the gen3...Haven't actually looked at any #'s though.

I believe that the general consensus is, that if we average out the driver and are just looking at the machines, the Gen II is a bit quicker for a quarter mile, though by the end of it the Gen II is coming on very strong and in a longer distance would prevail.

I notice that you have started this topic twice, so I am going to delete the other version that has not as yet had any replies.

Stephen don'tyou mean the G3 would prevail over a long distance?

FWIW I raced a G2 ATX at Firebird a few years back with the 3 when it was unmodded and I won by about 3 tenths.

I'm assuming the 2 was out of tune, I also killed my own 93 MTX with it but that was out of tune FOR SURE.

i disagree. I used to have a stock 94 auto with a tranny going bad. That car pulled harder and was definitly faster than my 97 with borla, chip, and K@N. The 3's seem to be too heavy. The Gen 2 will win

I agree. I've munched a few Gen III's. All were good fun races, but the II is just faster than the heavier III.

Later!

IMHO, Gens I & II are quicker off the line, but from a roll, the Gen 3's are monsters eek!

If I'm going uphill, doing, say, 15-20mph, and I floor it, the tranny will dump into first, the tach jumps to near 6k and the tires rip loose.

Fun stuff :D

I know for a fact that genIIs and genIs will take the genIIIs off the line, no question. BUT, I am fairly certain that the genIII would come back and start pulling in the longer races, like a standing mile race. I honestly think that a genIII would edge out the other two there. BTW, how much heavier is the genIII than the other two? IIRC, the genIIIs are only about 300lbs heavier, if I am not mistaken. shrug From a roll, though, I think that the genIII would sin there too, not by much, however. Going 40 mph and gunning it, that downshift to first is deadly.

Here are my experiences running with a GEN III. Last summer I raced a fellow Ontario SHO owner at Sparta race track. My 94 ATX was stock except for a K&N air filter and I think his black GEN III was stock as well. We raced at least 5 or 6 times and every race he would take me off the light and would have me until half track. At half track I would start reeling him in and by the end of the track I would be in front by one or two tenths and gaining at an ever increasing rate. This happened each and every time with me putting down consistent 15.5-15.6's and Ian putting down consistent 15.6-15.7's.

Yes, I did. Typo, sorry. Do any of you have a problem with the reply section here where sometimes letters that you hit on the keyboard do not make it to the screen? I have been having it for ages, but only at this site. And frequently, I find that the bottom half of the reply section does not show up. It has not for this reply, so as a result, it will not have my sig from the profile included below, I would guess.

Well that is the opposite of my experience. The GEN III has more low end torque that gets them out of the hole better than the GEN II ATX. But top end my GEN II was all over the GEN III and would have kept on pulling after the 1/4 mile.

I had a 94 ATX before my 98. I've never been much interested in the quarter so I can't add much to that discussion. However, I love to smash the gas at the end of an onramp to get to better than highway speeds(80+). The difference I found was that the GenII took a second or two then "snapped" into an accleration mode. The GenIII is just plain brutal from 40. With foot on floor the GenIII requires two hands for sure. The GenII not so much. The V6 was a blast to drive, don't get me wrong, but nothing pulls like a V8. To add a little more to this topic, my GenIII would run down my GenII in the twisties. No question. BTW only mod on both cars: K&N filter.

every experience will be different.

but I raced these two guys in a burgandy Gen III last summer. I was in the 7-11 and they came up to me and said, "hey thats a nice ass SHO you got man"...I said "thanx" got my slurpee and left. As I turned out of 7-11 I skeeted out a bit and they took notice. I approached the red light and they came and sat next to me pumpin some loud ass music (I was too :D ) Well light turned green and we took off....even through all gears. It was one of the best races I've ever had. Then we lined up again @ about 40 and took off. This time I pulled to about a car and a half ahead of him. I slowed down because this was in an area FILLED with cops lookin for kids racing. he flew passed, I turned. My only racing experience with a Gen III, but let me say...

his exhaust @ WOT WAS AMAAAAAAZING!!! Made me shit my pants (well almost) It was stock, so I can imagine a Gen III with some summit Turbo's or some Eldelbrocks.

I respect the Gen III's just dont think I could own one. I would say a Gen 2 would take a Gen 3 almost everytime. Not sure though...

I've got over 100 slips and about 15-20 of them are against Gen I's and II's. From my experience, the Gen IIIs take both off the line. I usually get 60' times in the 2.2s or 2.3s. The previous Gens I've run against get high 2.3s, 2.4s or worse.

I've also found that weather is a major factor. The Gen III seems to gain more from cold weather than the previous generations. Last fall I was running 15.0's and 15.1's and a buddy's Gen II ATX was running solid 15.3's. I also beat a MTX Gen II by a few hundredths last fall.
