To anyone who has done this before....how do you get the old one out?? Do you have to drop the steering column to get enough clearance? This is on a GenI. I've got the upper speedo cable disconnected from the lower and the column trim off, but it still doesn't have enough clearance.

TIA,

Kurt

Have done it on my '89. This is with a 89 dash-the 90/91 will have a different setup. The steering column doesn't need to be dropped, just move the wheel to its lowest position and remove all the plastic trim out of the way. you already have the upper speedo cable disconnected, now feed it through the firewall as you're pulling the cluster- keep doing this until the cluster is out far enough so you can disconnect the cable from the speedo. Then disconnect the wiring from the gauges (2 plugs?) After that, carefully wiggle the cluster out and it should come out.

If it's never been out before it will be a pain because the wireing has gotten stiff from sitting in place for all those years. If you have long arms you can get to the rear of the speedo and disconnect the cable from behind but you maight have to do it the way I had to. To get the one out in my '90 I disconnected the speedo cable at connection near the firewall and popped the grommet out. This let the cluster have a bit more room to move forward for access to the rear connectors. Unplug the 2 electrical connectors and you not can pull the whole cluster and cable out together. Unhook the cable and pop it back into place.
