All depends on whether preignition is a problem or not. I think 94 would be great but there is nothing wrong with 92. I would never trust 87 in my car, but there are those that run it.
There's no Sunoco here locally but I think 93 is available around town. Try a tank yourself sometime and see if you can notice a difference.

92 octane is the highest readily *or affordably* available here in Omaha and you can only get it at Amoco. I put in 91 octane Texaco premium - ALL the time. 91 is the most common high-octane avaiable around here. I don't think the extra cost for one octane point is worth it. I get 6 cents off each gallon of premium at Texaco :)

Unless you have done mods that change the atmosphere in the combustion chamber ( up the compression, forced induction, ect) you only need the 91 octane that the owners manual calls for. Anything else above that is wasted and can somtimes rob power.

As for SHOjaun's comment-

Crap, some people think that you won't exceed the car's octane demand with 87!

Rick
There was a artical published along time ago about octane and the SHO engine. It basicly said that you can run 87 regular unleaded, if you didn't do hard driving. The only reason the engine needed the octane was for detonation when you fast start. So if you are on a budget, and on a long road trip, Interstate like - cruise control, burning 87 for the trip should not harm the engine.

I run 87 in both my SHOs. Always have. Half the time it's a 10% ethanol mixture. Never had a problem.

Thank you SHOZ123. It doesn't freakin' matter! If your EEC and knock sensor are functioning properly, it's probably not worth the extra money to run premium fuel. If you "punch it" with 87 octane, it may take the EEC a few more revolutions to correct the timing than if you're running 94, but the performance difference is minimal. The following info at www.shotimes.com is very informative:

From what I understand...with higher octane gas and a properly running engine, the computer can advance the timing more during normal driving and thus get better gas milage, ect. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

No,the computer will only retard timing when it hears ping. Normally the timing is at full advance per programming specs. I got my 14.8/96.6 on 87 octane 10% ethanol gas.

I have to agree with Paul on this one.

My 89 with 207K on it gets fed a steady diet of 87 octane 10% ethanol stuff that we are required by the EPA to run here in St. Louis. I tried a tank of 92 octane pure gasoline purchased outstate last summer during one of the price drops. Got the same fuel mileage and noticed no change in performance.

Higher octane fuels, unless needed to correct pre-ignition problems or are a specific requirement of the manufacturer, are a 10 to 20 cent per gallon 'gullibility' tax on the vehicle owner.

I agree 200%!
Your friend makes the gas companies richer than they are. Is he running nitrous? Does the car ping? I think the answer to these are no. So, why waste the money on gas give it to me then. :D

You will get better gas mileage using the higher octane. As has been stated several times now, the lower octane fuel works just fine. I usually use the 89 octane with 10% ethanol mix because its cheapest unless I am on a long trip, then I use premium. I do believe that the lower octane fuel burns cleaner also.

The manual says 91 octane. So 91 from Petro Canada is what I put in. When I use to live in The States I used Amoco 93 octane.

You guys are lucky, all we got around town here and where I used to live in Denver was 91, 89, 87.

In a bit of a money cruch I filled up with 87 octane the day before yesterday. It runs fine, doens't ping or make any strange noises, but twice when I had the clutch in I saw the idle go up and down a bit. It's never done that before, but I don't know if it's because of the gas.

I will also say that the car seems to die easier. I killed it coming off a light this morning and kinda went "huh?". I went at it again and had to be very careful because the RPM would just dive. I'm finding myself feathering the clutch longer with the 87. For what it's worth, I'll do 89.

use what ever you want, but the fact of the matter is, straight from a ford engineer is that every ford is tuned to 87 octane. nothing you say will change that fact so you can say you better gas mileage from 93 but that fact is you do not. fuel economy, to get an correct measurment, you need to run the math for 2-3 months of consistant driving.
