Can the back seats be taken out of my 94 ATX to access the gas tank? I have a leak and want to know where it is and how to fix it. Thanks :)

No, you either have to drop the tank from underneath or cut yourself an access hole. It’s not that bad of a job though. I have done several tanks and I would recommend attempting to have it as empty as possible before you drop it if you decide to.

there is NO need to drop it. The hole method is perfectly safe and easy as long as you use the right tools. Go to http://www.shophoenixproject.com/fueldoor/fueldoor.htm to read on how to get to the gas tank through the seat.

Yes, you will have to cut a hole in the seat pan. I would recommend a dremel with the little cut-off wheels as they aren't big enough to cut any of the lines down there even if you try. Plus, this makes future fuel-pump replacements take, oh, all of 15 minutes.

Edit: I just cut three sides of mine out... that way I can just push it back closed. There's no reason to cut a complete hole...

Dont think I would recommend cutting your car apart near the fuel leak, if there is one.

Just run the tank low and drop it correctly.

Yeah not sure I want to be throwing sparks around a gas leak... I know for sure there is one because I can't fill the tank up past 3/4 or it all leaks onto the ground.

Anyway I just wanted to know before I went ripping out the back seat for nothing, I know some cars have access there.

Thanks guys

An air zip gun (with the proper bit) doesnt throw any sparks.

But it takes 10 minutes to drop the tank , i'd rather go that way.

Yeah I think that is what I'm gonna do, it's just a messy job and I'm not looking forward to it. The car sits so low I'll have to jack it up to the ceiling lol.

Anyone in OH have a gas tank I can pick up? lol

The way you describe it, your leak is probably in a seam or somewhere on the side which would be pretty hard to get to without dropping the tank, even if you cut a hole in the rear seat pan.

If you can get to it, without dropping the tank, check where the filler tube connects to the tank. Could just be a loose or worn out hose.

If it is in the tank itself, be very careful with trying to repair it yourself. If you can afford it, take it to a shop with the proper equipment to do it safely, or just get a new tank to replace the old one.

Good luck.

But it takes 10 minutes to drop the tank , i'd rather go that way unless the holding straps are rusted, then it takes about a month and a half.

Fixed for truth. I will agree with the others, though, the through-the-seat trick isn't going to do squat for a leak. That's only good for changing a fuel pump.

Also, JB-weld will fix a gas tank up real nice.
