Hey guys,

I have a pretty pronounced high pitched whine/hissing coming form the rear of the car from outside. (To hear it) I read a few posts under the search, and many say the pump is going. I'm pulling the FP gauge off my Mustang and hooking it up this afternoon to check it out. I can hear the pump cycle (same high-pitched whine/hiss) when I turn the key on. Should I start planning to install a pump in the near future?

Are there fuel PSI readings that would show me the pump is failing?

To my best knowledge, the pump hasnot been replaced yet, and the car has 108,000 plus on it. I just bought it a month ago, though.

Thanx!

The fuel pump is a high rpm, positive displacement pump that whem it is working, normally makes a rather high pitched hum. If the sound is unsteady or strained, the pump may be having problems, but as long as you can describe the sound as a "steady high pitched whine," the pump is doing what it is supposed to do. No matter what the pump sounds like, it is a good idea to check the fuel rail pressure before replacing the pump so that you don't replace a fully functional pump.

Pressures are good, so I guess it is normal. Just sounded loud to me, but I'll take the advice, and thanks again!

NY for now, WY for real
The key is to listen to a CHANGE in sound.
I had one that progressively got louder whining and then just didn't work anymore.

The cheap AutoZone pump I replaced it with is louder than my 4-yr old son at 7am when you're trying to sleep in. :D A very persistent, loud sound. From the very minute it turned on. (The pump. My son took a while to get consistently loud. thumb )
