I was going to put new front brake pads on but I ran into a problem. The threads that one of the torx bolts goes into is stripped. Would it be a good idea to use a helicoil type fix here? Any advise at all would be greatly appreciated.

Neil, do you mean the holein the caliper bracket, it is one of 2 holding the caliper on.
If so, no I would not recommend coiling that, you can get a knuckle for cheap, and it is worth the extra 1 hour of work to swap the knuckle and like 50 tops for the part, compared to needing to stop, and she says NO.
Good Luck

are the threads real bad? if not, u can try to clean the threads by finding the thread measurement and tap it, clean up the threads carefully.

either that or do the brake upgrade.... :)

I've done the helicoil type fix in this area with no problem. But, it should only be a temporary fix until you get the new knuckle. The only thing is that you should remove the knuckle any way to ensure that you drill a straight hole. I would recoment you chase or clean the threads like Xs SHO 1 sugested before you do that. No matter how bad they are. All you need is a thread pitch guage and a tap. You may also want to clean up the threads on the bolt with a die too. The pitch guage is usualy found in a tap & die set.

Good luck

I ran into this too! Several problems. Most have been mentioned. The biggest problem is that no thread repair kits are available for the 9mm thread. I have looked and looked. I just replaced the spindle instead.

Its 7am in NC, and I just got out from under my SHO with the same dilema. Apparently, it has been screwed for some time now, allowing a little extra play, and messed up the wheel bearing. After pressing in the new bearing, I found these threads to be stripped too, on my SHO. I am going to try to fix this with an oversize caliper bolt from NAPA, and see if it works. Wish me lots of luck!! Let me know if you think this is a bad fix. I probably will end up replacing the knuckle anyway, but for now....
THANKS
