I have no idea how to stop it completely, but they sell "de-icer" in little metal cans that you can squirt on after it's frozen to unfreeze it.

I've never used it though. wink

If they keep freezing, they have moisture in them

Maybe a product that displaces water (WD-40)will clean them out. Follow that with a proper lock lubricant to prevent re-freezing.

*FREE ADVICE FROM A LOCKSMITH*

WD-40 works great, just make sure you re-apply every so often.

NEVER try to use your key to FORCE the frozen lock to turn. Instead, hold your key under an open flame (i.e. Bic Lighter) to heat up the metal, then work it in and out of the lock til it frees up, then apply WD-40. The heat from the key will transfer to the lock cylinder and melt any accumulated ice. Good Luck!

Later!

I have a similar problem but it's the whole damn door that freezes up. The locks and handle all work, but the door just won't open.

Be careful or the door handle will come off in your hand while still being closed! madflame

In icy Wyoming this used to happen a lot, the Taurus door seals freeze up pretty easy due to design..

Sometimes I've had to find a door that WOULD open and push on the stuck door from the inside. You can also pull the handle (slightly) and grab the top corner of the door and pull on it. Or try some of that de-icer stuff.

It's funny I have had my entire car frozen shut several times (had to climb through the back of my Subaru once) but never bothered to buy any de-icer... :D

Once you finally get the door open, dry the seal off, then spray it with silicone spray to prevent re-freezing.

Ok, along the same lines....anybody ever have the gas door opener cable freeze up? It never fails to happen to me when I'm super low on fuel and am at the gas station to fill up. I must add though that it only happens when we have freezing rain or after a car wash. Is there some way to get some WD-40 inside the cable assembly for that?

Is it the cable, or the door itself Beth? I have that happen to me as well, but it is the door frozen shut. Has had nothing to do with the cable. As far as doors and locks frozen, well, that's what remote start is for. :D 15 minutes idling with the heat on high thaws out all the doors, windows, and locks.

The cable on mine freezes up. You can't even lift the lever up inside the car. I even broke the pull handle off my emergency release one year trying to get it open. frown

After reading this thread, I'm thankful I have the keypad! thumb hail
Oh he has a keypad I believe his passenger side door won't unlock we know its not frozen. He just can't open it at all. The drivers side door lock is freezing up so that won't open when its cold. Not the key lock but the whole locking mechanism is toast I think.

yep....I have gotten some moisture into the locking mechanism on the latch...

I am guessing that combined with dirt and grim has caused the latch to bind on the passanger door...

The drivers door has moisture in it...I think after examining the latch, it simply needs to have a good lubricant applied. I used WD-40 a couple weekends ago and it was working well, but now the latch squeaks and freezes, so I gotta re-apply a better lubricant...
