I have a 99SHO, (duh which is why Im on this site) So I went out of town for a few days and left it parked at the airport. It ran fine getting there but on the way home the speedo went haywire, the O/D off, lit on the dash and it was still in O/D, but it would suddenly act like the engine died, rpms went up as the t/c actually did unlock. Has the t/c finally given up? This car when I bought it had the trans rebuilt by a Ford trans tech whom I bought it from. So far the car has performed great. I do have an SCT, mid grade tune, cams welded as well. Trans fluid smell okay as in no burnt oder. (I was once a Cadi mechanic back when we were mechanics) So I do have knowledge of sign of a bad trans.
Anyone else ever experience anything like this? What did you find to be the cause?

Oh yeah, how could I forget. I can now die! While out of town I had to rent a car. My wife had reserved a Mazda 626 or simuliar car. But when we pulled up there sat a Hertz SHELBY. So I did what any self respecting, raised in the '70's born in America red blooded man would do... I upgraded!!! The lady gave me a deal on it and I jumped on it. What a pleasure that machine is to drive. I hated to turn it back in, but alas the lotto ticket I bought while in FLA did not come in or I would have driven that car home! Just what I need, another Mustang. If you ever get the chance, drive the legend. (even though I don't like how Carrol operates) you can't take away from his stuff he produces!

The speedo is independent of the tranny, so the multiple symptoms suggest an electrical problem to me. Possibly a loose battery cable, or a loose cable at the mega fuse box or at the alternator.

Aren't they auto's though? I think there were only four or so made that were stick. I guess an automatic is more appealing to most. Would be sweet though none the less!

I shall look around. One of the reasons I stopped turning wrenches for a living
was b/c of all the electronics. So many issue can arise from another totally non related source. i.e. when the cam sensor went bad on my Powerstroke, my radio,a/c, and fuel gauge all quit working.
So where would I find this mega fuse box? I now suck at electricals!

As for the SHELBY, indeed it was an auto that sounded and acted alot like a stick car. I loved paying tolls just so I could stomp it leaving the gates, what a nice tone it had!

ABS module or connector is my bet

The ABS module feeds the computer vehicle speed.

If the speedo went nuts and went in error the Transmission is going to start doing stupid things pronto.

I would check and clean the connector on top of the ABS module (just ahead of and below the battery. But symptoms like this required me to replace the ABS module. My speedo would sometime sit on the "0" peg and the trans would get real stupid then and not want to leave first gear and such.

So i have cleaned the batt terminals and wires to the mega fuse. That did not fix it. I took it to the guys next door at the shop and it has a speed sensor showing bad, but it has not set a hard code. I shall drive it til then I guess. This problem is only happening when the outside temp is in the 70's and the car is warmed up. Strange stuff this electronic voodoo!!!

Get and ABS module from the boneyard...

One wheel speed sensor going bad WILL not cause your speedo to act up. I had to repalce an ABS module after the speedo would occasionaly not leave the peg when underway, and prior to it starting that it was errantly throwing a code for the LF wheel speed sensor. After replacing the ABS computer (under the battery - a real PITA to get to) all the problems went away. I had tried cleaning and reseating the connector to the ABS numerous times before this.

Call around and find a boneyard that has a Gen3 SHO that isn't demolished in front and ask for the ABS pump assembly, you should be able to get one for an easy two figures.
