Is it hard to do this by oneself or is it recommended to have a garage do it? I am very mechanically inclined so I could do it myself, just wondering if at all possible to do it myself.

Depends. The older SHO's don't have a drain plug on the transfer case, so you'll have to drill and tap one. The newer SHO's (2013 and up) have a drain plug. Harder than it needs to be, but it's definitely doable, just takes a little bit of maneuvering.
