Little dilema ... another possible delay. I talked to my apolster yesterday and he is pretty much done with the parts i gave him to do (have not had a chance to post pics). He was in the process of installing a sunroof on his civic. He decided not to go with the sunroof he had bacause it was too big. He has a 98 civic 2 door. The sunroof is freeking big it left about 2 inches on each side, plus he cut the reinforcement on the roof to fit it, but he was afraid that it would eventually sag. He is looking for a smaller one.

So he offered it to me. 40 bucks for the unit (he got it of the junkyard, thats what he paid for it, complete with motor and rails, perfect no scratches) plus 200 for installation (at his job they charge 1800-2200 for a sunroof install). He says is a straight forward process and it take around 4 hrs to do. Since my whole interior is apart it might take less time. I trust the guy and he says he guarantees his work.

I think im gonna go ahead and do it before it gets painted. Other than being alittle anxious about this and possible water leaks ... any other reasons or comments on why i should not or should do this?

thanks!

just my opinion, but i worry about those for a couple reasons.

1)leaks as you already mentioned. aftermarket sunroofs are known for that
2)added weight to an already heavy car
3)most aftermarket sunroofs don't look as nice as OEM ones and get crappy faster with age.

just my .02, but that's what i would be thinking.

How tall are you? Sunroofs suck for tall people.

Having had cars with and without sunroofs, I'm in the "no sunroof" camp.

I have a moonroof on my SHO but if I didn't and I was dead set on installing one, I'd consider cutting the roof off of a moonroof equipped Taurus (either the roof panel or the entire thing with the pillars) and bonding it to my car after removing the roof. I'd also make sure to transfer over all of the drainage tubes or make sure they are in before proceeding.

This aftermarket roof doesn't recede back into the roof, does it? I assume it only flips up?

IMHO if the moonroof doesn't slide back into the roof itself, then I would not do it. I think the kind that go over the roof are ugly. But thats just my opinion.

I wouldn't do the sunroof, because if it does leak (and even if it takes 2 years) you just ruined all the work you did. I personally would just leave it alone.

I worked at many car dealerships and have heard/seen to many horror stories.

Two of our three SHOs have factory moonroofs. They fit flush in the roof, so they look fine. Haven't looked at many aftermarket moonroofs, but IIRC they are not flush. That would look bad on a nice car :dribble: like yours.

I believe I would even choose a non roof car over a factory moonroof. Both moonroof cars have more wind noise and both leak. One needs a new seal and the other is difficult to adjust, hence the noise and leaks. That one stained the headliner.

I had an aftermarket power ASC moonroof installed in my SHO years ago. It performed flawlwessly and looked great till the day I removed it. I would go so far as to say it is/was superior in every way to the problematic factory Ford moonroof.

was it a spoiler style ( one that slides out ) or one that tucks in (slides inside)?

Here is what the car looks like now ... still unpainted. And the leather pieces that go on the doors plus the inner door handles that are now in suede.

First one was a Ford racing aluminum manual door ... does not lock. the second one is an Audi TT unit that locks and its spring loaded. Not aluminum though ... very hard material. Took me an hr and a half to shave down half inch thick and probably square inch area, times 3 mounting points. Much better looking too.
