exhaust modification

I'm about ready to replace the factory pipe on my 1990 SHO. Just need some opinions about the best, and most cost effective way to do it. Do I just go to a muffler shop and have them cut the single pipe out and replace it with two? Use one of the cat back kits that can be purchased? Do glass packs sound good on these cars, or are the stock mufflers better?

Your opinions please.

What pipe(s) are you talking?

What part of Fort Worth are you from? I know of some exhaust/muffler shops that tend to do good work for a good price.

I live far south fort worth. I am just trying to find the best compromise between cost and performance to replace the single exhaust pipe from the y pipe back. There is nothing wrong with it, just that common sense tells you that the flow would have to be better with two pipes instead of one. Don't know why Ford did it that way, but just like a lot of other things, if they didn't screw it up, we wouldn't get to have all this fun fixing it.

While true dual exhaust would be nice on a SHO, its just not practical. You would be better off keeping the 2-1-2 configuration and either getting a high flow y-pipe and cat back exhaust. But if sound is all your looking to improve than just replace the mufflers. Whatever you do, do not remove the cats, it will do more trouble than good if you do that.

A 2.5" mandrel bent replacement using the stock setup will allow for more than enough flow for most normally aspirated SHOs. If you really want true duals go for it, but I doubt you will realize any gains, and its going to be a PITA to actually install.

Some have found that a single exhaust all the way back from the y-pipe makes for some good gains.

There's a Muffler shop off of Hemphill called Starz, bewteen Biddison and Berry[actually next to that Church/School place and it's a yellow shop], they do nice work and have a good price. Just don't go up there dressed up like you have some money in your pocket, just go in some worn out jeans and a t-shirt and bargain them down some more!
