Engine swap/fix

I have seen a couple of 96-99 SHO for sale with engine troubles. I assume they are likely having cam issues. I was curious as to what it would cost to have a new engine put into one. If that was done would the new engine have the fixed cams?

What would be some options suggestions on engines to swap in?

A new motor is about a $10K operation in the US in US dollars, assuming you can find one, and about $14K in Canada, in Canadian dollars. If it is a motor new from the factory, not easy to find these days, the cams will not be fixed, since from the Ford viewpoint, there is still not a problem that they will acknowledge as requiring a fix. So, you would have to get them welded even for a brand new motor. Which would be done most easily before installing, I would think, if only from an access standpoint.

A cam failure motor can be repaird for less money that it takes to acquire another motor. Granted you have more invested in labor that you would with an engine swap, but you have saved another one of these increasingly rare motors from the slavage lot or scrap heap.

You have to pull the motor and ATX to swap the motor. Once you have that done, you can rapair the motor with about 6 or 7 more hours of time and put it back. I suppose a rookie mechanic could get you for more labor than that, and assuming no major piston damage (rare), you can reapir any one bank of the motor for about 700 - 1200 in parts (depending on what the head costs you or if you can jsut have the head with the bad cam reworked it could be even cheaper). So worst probable case scenario you would have less in parts then you are likely to find a motor for as a replacement. Granted you still have labor to dela with, but saving one fo these mtoros is a VERY rewarding feeling.
