Personally I think the easiest thing to do in that case is take the entire drivetrain: engine, transmission, subframe, everything out the bottom as an assembly.

So, you don't really have an option. Take them both out the top at the same time. I did it with my ATX and it wasn't that difficult, and a MTX should be easier.

well i have had the tranny out 2 times already in the past year.... but never the engine with it... so i was just wonderin if it would be easier to get it out with the engine i guess what my main question was is how hard is it to remove these engines... with the tranny attached i could have a tranny out in a day or 2 by itself

It's a lot of work either way, but I'd just pull the engine and trans together out from the top with a cherry picker (engine hoist). There's a lot of wires/plugs to disconnect, a bunch of hoses, disconnect your y-pipe, cv shafts, other bolts, and a number of other things. Definitely an involved process either way you go and it'll take a few days of preparation depending on how fast you move. It took me a few days for removal and a few days to put it all back together once I dropped everything back in. But as SHOtimer says, you don't really have an option but to take the engine out from the top. Doing the trans out the bottom then the engine out the top later would just be silly and extra work. Hope that helps!

u dont need a lift to get the subframe, engine and tranny out through the bottom. i didnt,i just use two jacks and sum cinder blockes. just do it on stable ground.and it is alot of work but my dad and I got the subframe dropped in 1 day (first time) and the motor and tranny separted from the subframe in less the 2 hours the next sunday.

CINDER BLOCKS ARE DEATH TRAPS !!!!!!!!

theres nothing strong about a cinder block anything you can easily break with a ball peen hammer shold NOT be used to support a car your working under

if you need extra height from your jack stands, BUY NEW ONES

it was only while we pulled the subframe out so the car was high enough to clear the engine. it isnt that much weight with the whole subframe on the ground. we never had cinders supporting the car with the engine in it...thats just careless.
