Engine rebuilding

Does anyone know of an engine rebuilder that has experience with the 1989 3.0l SHO engines? I'm up here in Calgary Alberta but I'd be willing to ship the engine somewhere if the rebuilder specializes in SHO engines. Some of the local rebuilders I've called don't want to touch it.

Find a local rebuilder that does import and OHC engines.
alot of old school builders won't touch anything that isn't some old domestic V8 with huge tolerances.

A cheaper option would be just to find a good shape used 3.0 or 3.2.

What are you putting the rebuilt engine into? Unless it's going into something exotic I would just go get another engine like was posted above. If it's going into something special, that will get a lot of looks, ie. roadster, dune buggy, Seven, PM me, I have a 87 mile 3.0 sitting on an engine stand in my shop right now. Don't PM me if you're having trouble affording valve cover gaskets.

Unless this is a tortured car case, it is surprising how little needs to be replaced on even a high mileage motor. What the old guys call a soft rebuild (rings bearings gaskets) is usually all that is needed, and most of the time you don't even need rings on this motor. These are already what the oldtimers call a "balanced and blueprinted" motor right from the factory.
Read some old threads on this forum and research some topics like Shophoenix 60 K and take your lead from that.
This isn't a 305 Chev or a 302 Ford that requires a machine shop rebuild every few years, these motors require a whole different approach because they were so well built to begin with.

agreed with all above if the original motor is that bad id look for a 3.2 or if need be a 3.0 or just do rod bearings and 60ks an call it a day

Thanks for all your great advice. The project since you asked is that I'm transplanting the SHO engine in a 1962 Sunbeam Alpine. The engine has about 182k on it and even though it runs and idles smoothly, it blows quite a bit of blue smoke. I bought the whole car really cheap because it quit on the original owner. I'm going to use the engine as is just to get it fitted, then remove and rebuild. I'm getting a feel now for the cost of a possible rebuild and any modifications that I want to do like cams or larger throttle bodies.

I live in Central NJ (USA) and talked to the owner of Merkel Engines (I think his name is Jack). He says he has some experience with the SHO motor, and has a torque plate which is used if you're boring the motor over. He also says he can get a few more CFM from the head by doing some mild work in the bowls.

If you are dead-set on shipping parts out for rebuild, maybe you want to give him a call.
