So as many of you probably do not remember, I was an avid SHO owner and driver up until January of 2011 when my car threw a Rod Bearing and we did not want to put more money into maintenance. I have bought and love my Acura Integra, but I still want to fix my Taurus and finally have a little cash with which to do so, but I need to do the work myself in order to be able to afford it. However, I am not very well versed in taking apart/rebuilding engines and was wondering if anyone has any links or help that would make my attempts easier. Should I open up the top of the engine somehow and check for damage or should I just go straight to removing the oil pan and replace the Rod Bearings? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I know a lot about cars and have a lot of experience but do not have much experience with engines themselves.

Just get the rod bearings swapped out. It's a $100 dollar experiment that will determine the viability of the engine.

Check all the bearings before changing any. I was changing a set one at a time once and got to the last one and the crank was scored an unusable.

Replacement engine with good internals is the way to go. At the very least, you want a serviceable crankshaft and rods and the engine you have should be considered suspect on that front. This is from my own experience.

Easiest way to see if the rod is good it to take the cap off and lay it flat on a level surface. Any movement and it's scrap. A scored journal is obvious.
