While I was looking at my son's SHO for a PS pump noise I found an odd thing. When he turns the steering wheel back and forth the engine moves on it's mount. I guess one of the engine or trans mounts are bad. Does anyone know what's going on with this and/or which mount is bad? How hard are the mounts to replace?

Chances are it not just the engine moving, it the subframe also. Best case it's just some bad sub frame bushings, worst your sub frame to body mounts are rusted out. Do a search here for "sub frame bolt recall" for more information.

Thats a good diagnosis.

I looked up the problem on the NHSTA site. There appears to be no milage or time limit. It looks like Ford will have to fix this problem, I hope.
Here is the recall.

NHTSA Recall No. 98V323/Ford Recall No. 98S36
Vehicles: Ford 1986-1995 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable vehicles manufactured from October 14, 1985, through June 27, 1995; and certain 1988-1994 Lincoln Continental vehicles manufactured from November 4, 1987 through November 18, 1994.
Population: 2,697,000 vehicles sold or currently registered in the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.
Problem: The rear lower sub frame mount plate nut can experience stress corrosion cracking if subjected to long-term exposure to road salts which are used extensively in the above listed states. Detachment of the body mounts at the rear corners of the sub frame, which supports the engine and transmission, would allow the rear corners of the sub frame to drop. If both rear corners of the sub frame drop, steering could become suddenly very difficult, adversely affecting vehicle control and possibly result in a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will install sub frame rear mount bolts, reinforcement plates, and plate nuts. Owners should contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Often, this symptom occurs even with the recall having been performed due to a simple failure of the bushings themselves. The bushings are NOT covered by the recall, only the bolts and nuts. If your bushings are shot, they will still replace your hardware under the recall but you will have to pay to replace the bushings.

Peel back the carpet on the passenger side and look for the rubber plug in the floor. If the plug is present, the recall has already been performed. If so, you are completely on your own. You can call your local dealer with your VIN to see if OASIS shows the eas open or completed for your specific vehicle.

If you need bushings, the Gen III style work very well with only a minor mod.

word on the subframe bushing. Mine are shot, and the engine move about 1 inch from side to side.:oogle: I'll replace them when it will be warmer outside.

my buddy snapped a subframe bolt on his gen 1, his motor and subframe moved quite a bit, get it checked out and be certain, could be fatal.
