yeah, I understand that those stethoscopes(sp) work very well, but what If you don't know what you are listening to?? besides, I found the noise by actually laying on top on the engine and sticking my head and ear by the noise. I was actually quite a funny sight to look at..... How do I know if the tensioner is bad when I rip the engine apart? Is it going to look broken??
Noise spreads like wild fire in these engines. What you do is put the stethescope on each part of the engine and compare loudness of the noise, that is how your isolate it.

You never know until you get in there. Ideally, none. That's why there used to be kits to rent where you would use the ones that you needed and then replace the rest. They are hard to find now though... :(

I'm going to be offering one as soon as I can get the funds together.

The other option is to find out which ones you need and then close the engine back up, then order the shims and when you get them open the engine back up and replace them. Not idea but it works...
