I'm in the process of freshening up a 3.0 to go into my 1990 SHO. With the engine out of the car I planned on doing everything I could to it, short of a complete rebuild, to insure reliability down the road. I've completed the valve adjustment, plan on replacing the rod bearings, new water pump, all seals & gaskets, new cam & crank sensors, themostat, etc. Now the main question. I'm thinking about the mains & is it necessary to replace them. If so can I check the clearance on the bearings and if in spec reuse them or once I've got it apart is it better to simply replace them? My concern is overstressing the cap nuts with off-on-off-on. Also should I check the specs on the oil pump while everything is apart? Thanks in Advance.

The main bearings are readily available, but without the thrusts. It seems that the main bearings last twice as long as the rods. I have taken several Yamahammer's apart, and most of the mains looked pretty good. You an replace them, but isn't as necessary as the rods. I have measured a few oil pumps as well. The problem is what to do if yours is out of spec. They are almost impossible to find new, and a used one may not be mutch better that what you have. Just make sure there isn't any severe gouging in the housing, or gears. You should be ok. I have yet to come across a "healthy" SHO engine that was "out of spec" on any of the rod/mains. Hope this helps you! keep the SHO's alive! :thumb:
