Part I
Just failed my emissions test. I passed the Carbon Monoxide part, but failed the Hydrocarbons (HC) portion! The standard for HC has a composite of 0.80, and my HC reading was 4.06. That seems way way out of wack! The guy said my SHO was probably burning too much fuel. Well, tell me something I don't know!

What can I do/repair to pass this part of the emissions test? FYI, I replaced my CCRM a few months ago because the original went out. I slapped on a relay module from a base Taurus, and not off a SHO. I haven't had any problems since, but what do I REALLY know! Also, my IDLE is at 1000rpm, and sometimes slightly above that. I've tried resetting the computer many times, but isn't doing the trick. My gas mileage seems horrible, to say the least!!!!

Part II

Ran my codes, using a Ford Decoder, and I could only come up with these codes: 113 & 998. What exactly do they stand for? I know the 113 has something to do with the ACT, but some elaboration from someone in the know is appreciated!!! I have no idea what a 998 code is!

My CEL light stop coming on a month ago, after always being on. I just found out that it's just not working. Good thing I have a Ford Decoder to run the codes! Someone told me this could have something to do with the PCM, but what is that exact, and where? Searching isn't always the easiest function here! Is the bulb burned out, and should I worry about it?

Thanks!!!!!!:thumb:

1. CEL should come on in START. If it doesn't, the bulb may be burned out. Advance SEARCH keywords "CEL* MIA*" and my username ought to get you to old posts I've done.

2. 113 code: Verify the IAT sensor is plugged in. If it is, unplug it, insert a jumper wire into the connector between the signal and the signal ground wires. RESET PCM. Rerun codes and see if you now get a 112 code. If so, replace the sensor. If not, there is a problem with either the wiring harness or the PCM.

3. 998 code. Your computer is in "limp" mode due to one or more "hard" faults. It will be running pig rich (gee, there's a news flash for ya). Fix the 113 fault and this will probably clear.

Otherwise, see the tip in my signature.

Thanks! Hey, would I get that 113-IAT code due to the car not being warmed up before running the codes? I didn't drive around before checking the codes so the engine was completely cool. Could the failed HC readings mean that my O2 sensors need replaced? Also, I only drove between 10-15 minutes before taking the emissions test, but I feel that was long enough because the engine gets hot very fast I've noticed! Thanks!

No. This a computer-detected fault with the sensor circuit. It means the computer is getting a very wrong reading from the sensor. The IAT just measures the temperature of the intake air.

Fix this fault, reset the computer, and retest by running KOEO and KOER PCM QuickTest. Verify that 998 does not occur.

Could the failed HC readings mean that my O2 sensors need replaced?

See my prevous post. Seems you quit reading after the first couple of words....if that much.

Somehow, the IAT sensor was unplugged! :oogle: How? Probably from the vcg's I did a few months back.

I warmed the car up, and tested for codes again!

Key on, car off: Zilth----111; stored codes----113, 332
Key on, car on: Zilth-----111

The CEL is burned out, however!

I guess I'm ready for my 2nd try at the emission test, eh?! Hope this works!

Thanks all!!!!:thumb:

How many times do I need to say the words "RESET PCM"......

FWIW, in my state, a burned out CEL is an automatic failure. It MUST work when the ignition key is turned to START (bulb proveout).

Um, the CEL was burned out on my initial emissions test. I only failed because of my HC composite! And of course, the only thing left is to reset the PCM.....since, I'm only getting stored codes now, right?! Thx!!!:hail:
