Try SHOTimes.com or searching the forum for lots of details on the SHO motor, including a post that has a link to the original patent Yamaha filed for the intake.

Among other things, the intake plenums provide a means to evenly distribute a previously measured volume of air to all of the cylinders. Without this volume, the cylinders closest to the throttle body would get the highest flow and cylinders on the far end would get a lower pressure/flow of feed air. It basically gives all of the cylinders an equal chance to breathe the same air.

The use of the two, staged sets of intake runners also requires a greater volume of plenum just to provide a surface area as the starting point for all those 12 tubes.
