Back in Michigan ... again.
And it sounded much better than the SHO, primarily because I could actually hear the engine. Still no turbo woosh, but the more I drive the EcoBoost cars the more impressed I am with this engine. No way does this act like a 3.5 liter turbo powerplant.

But I'm curious as to why the Flex has more engine note than the SHO

The SHO probably has way more sound deadning materials than Flex. Remember there is a commercial with a dragster in the middle of it and an Acura comparing decibels.

I don't understand however why Ford wouldn't have similar sound deadening in the Flex as opposed to the SHO. The Flex isn't supposed to be the flagship performance sedan after all.

Not really a gripe. I was just VERY surprised to have that much engine note in the Flex. FWIW, it doesn't sound as exotic as the ol' Yamahammer, but it does have a nice ring to it.

Like most wagons, it most likely has more "drone"/resonance due to more open interior space. Don't, know, just wild guess...I do look forward to driving one of these soon.

You are driving in a big open box. When I first bought the Expedition a few years ago (RIP), first thing I noticed was how many more sounds I heard. It was louder than my current truck that has mud tires.

Not to be thrown off topic, but have you guys seen how the new Mustang GT has an intake tube that runs into the passenger firewall so you CAN hear the motor under hard acceleration. Kinda a cool idea I suppose, but I believe you guys hit the nail on the head with the sound proofing material found in the new SHO.

I was lucky enough to drive the Flex, EcoBoost Flex and SHO back to back and the regular Flex def had the loudest engine noise by far. Then the EcoBoost Flex was much quieter and the SHO was like a coffin, dead silent. The EB Flex starts at $40g's BTW too.
