Door Mirror Question

Now that I have the SHO running well and reliable again to daily drive, I need to focus on fixing a couple of small things, one being the driver's side door mirror. Well, a couple of years ago I was backing the car into my backyard and didn't realize that I was close to a chain link fence pole that was at the double gate that I backing through and it was too late when I heard the crunch and cracking of the driver's door mirror being broken, only the housing and not the actual mirror. Fast forward to a couple of months ago, I removed the mirror, (housing), glued it back together and reinstalled it back on the car, it was good enough to get by but I want to replace it. So, this mirror is heated and I am probably going to look for one at pull-a-part and hopefully can find one that is the same color as the car. Now, if I cannot find a heated one, can the insides of my heated mirror be installed into the housing of a regular door mirror? Thanks for the help in answering my question.

Now it does have to be painted but still.

Thanks for the link. I'm gonna try my luck at pull-a-part first and see if I can find one that is the same color as the car. I don't mind utilizing used parts as long as they are in good shape or clean up nicely. I see new mirrors that are heated but they don't have that neat little script that says "heated". I'm a little bit OCD in keeping things original looking and I like that little script on our heated mirrors, Lol. Yep, I'm crazy.

Odd normally the aftermarket heated versions said that. I just stole one off my dearly departed '97 SLO when someone was nice enough to relocated my passenger mirror in a parking lot. The colors are different, but they are so close nobody notices the mirror is a forest vs willow green.

Parking lots are so mean...

While it would be a little bit of a project usually auto parts store have paint to match. I've gotten a few cans in the past and been happy with the results.

Yeah, I've seen some aftermarket mirrors that say "heated" on them, but the examples I have seen don't have the same font as the original. It's like a cursive script.

Well, I went to Pull-a-Part last weekend and found that outside mirrors in good condition are difficult to come by, found lots of broken ones. My search continues on.

From all 96-99 Taurus I saw (road, mines, scrapyards), I maybe saw one that didn't have heated mirrors.

For your general knowledge, heated mirrors (heated mirror plates only), can be retreived from the mirror assembly.

They are snapped to the electric motor, held by four small plastic legs. Second step is to unplug the 2 small electric wires. but doing this, you have to be very carefull because if pressure or tension is put on electrical plugs (2), heating system will be damaged and could stop heating partially or completely.

Just saying, if you can't find one with "Heated" mention.

Well, that was what I was wanting to know originally, if I could take the mirror that I have which is heated, and remove the components and reinstall them into another mirror housing? The mirror on my car works fine and is intact, the housing of the mirror is the only thing damaged, it is cracked but I glued it back together before the car went to the transmission shop as a temporary fix. So if I can just find an Ebony Satin Metallic mirror housing, can I just install my components into that housing?

Yes, as mentioned the housings are all the same. You could just move the mirror components from the bad housing to a good housing of your choosing.

OK - I DO have a 1996 Ebony Satin Driver's mirror I might part with. A couple light scratches, but in really good overall condition. It came off Don Mallinson's old 1996 SHO.

Exact color match with the metallic speckles and even has the original "Heated" Script. See pix.

It was working fine when I removed it.
