Does anyone recognize this part?

I put my engine on a stand (rebuilding the tran and replacing rod bearings). When I turned the engine over on the stand (physically flipped it to have access to the oil pan, not trying to start it), this part fell out.

I don't know if it fell out from where it was installed or if it was removed and set on the engine somewhere.

Anyone recognize it?

Maybe. Isn't there a rod in the middle of the IAC? It's been a long time since I fooled with one vs replace.

Thanks for the replies. I will check the idle actuator but it's idling OK (just got the engine put back in) and someone else I asked that knows SHO's pretty well said he didn't recognize it and made a good point... the part is spotless and looks brand new.

I'm now concerned it's off of one of the other vehicles stored nearby... the search goes on.

If the photo shows it in the exact condition as found, it would appear to be something that normally is bathed in oil, such as the transmission. The valve of the IAC would be shorter and likely covered with a bit of a carbon film.

Could be the pressure relief valve from an oil pump? Never seen what one looks like in a SHO, but IIRC they resemble this in an old school V8(although it's been years since I've had an FE oil pump apart).

I second Greg's thought. It does look like an oil pressure relieve valve that was bathed in engine oil (which would make sense!). Have you googled the oiling system to possibly see an exploded view of all the parts?

You guys were VERY close (no it wasn't a test). It was a pressure relief value but for the power steering pump. So yes, bathed in oil and yes, a pump. Well done!

So of course everything was buttoned back up and no power steering. Took me taking the pump out and taking one off another SHO to realize I had the dreaded 'missing parts' issue. Put the valve in and surprise, power steering works fine.

Not sure how this bypass valve works, based on the direction of the spring the valve would seem to normally close off flow to the high pressure line to the steering rack... I am not sure what would cause it to open (compress the spring). Backpressure?

In any event, it works and figured out what it was but would still like to understand better how it works.
