My mechanic told me the other day that i have a stuck injector and it will need to be replaced. He said the the fuel pump and filter works down to 20 microns. The filter in the injector works down to 5 microns. (now i didn't even know they had filters) He then said that if i use injector cleaner, i risk disturbing the dirt in the gas tank, and sending it to the injectors. His point was that fuel injector cleaner won't work and he doesn't recomend using it. I thought... interesting way of thinking about it, however, why does it exist if it won't solve dirty injector problems? I need a seccond opinion about this.
By the way, how much are injectors for a GEN I SHO and are they hard to replace?

Sounds like your mechanic has a looming boat payment and wants you to make it.

Try the injector cleaner. It might work and it's a lot cheaper than his boat payment. It sure won't hurt anything. I've never heard of a filter inside an injector either, however, there are some very fine tolerances inside it. Check out http://www.howstuffworks.com/fuel-injection.htm for a layman's intro to injection systems.

YOu can look up pricing for various parts at www.shonutperformance.com

BTW, what is the symptom that leads him to think you have a stuck injector?

That story goes along with that old tale about running the gas tank low and how it lets the fuel pump ingest the silt that resides near the bottom of the tank. If the silt isn't soluble, the cleaner won't affect it. It the silt is there, the fuel pump suction is always in the same place on the bottom of the tank, so if it hasn't been sucked up yet, it won't make any difference how much fuel is in the tank.

The real trick about the debris in the fuel tank is not putting it there in the first place. Golden Rule: Do not fill up at a gas station where the tanker truck is filling the underground tanks or shortly thereafter. That definitely stirs up the silt in the storage tanks that will get pumped into your fuel tank if you fill up. Drive away.

Fuel Filter

Fuel is filtered at three locations:

l. in-line

2. in-tank

3. fuel injector inlet

In-Line

The in-line fuel filter has the following characteristics:

1. It provides filtration to protect the small metering orifices of the fuel injectors.

2. It is located downstream of the electric fuel pump (FP) module and is mounted on the underbody.

3. It is a one-piece construction which cannot be cleaned. If it becomes clogged, it must be replaced.

The flexible fuel vehicle fuel filter and base is fuel methanol- and fuel ethanol-compatible. Use of a gasoline fuel filter and base will result in failure of the fuel filter and base. The fuel filter and base is located at the RH rear frame rail adjacent to the RH front corner of the fuel tank.

In-Tank

A nylon filter element is mounted on the fuel pump module inside the fuel tank and is used to protect the fuel pump module from fuel tank contaminants. The fuel pump module is snapped into a plastic retainer upon installation.

Fuel Injector Screen

A filter screen is located at the top of each injector and is not serviceable. If the injector screen becomes clogged, the complete injector assembly must be replaced. (3.0L (2V)),(3.0L (4V)) or (3.4L (4V)).

Try a can of Berryman's B12 Chemtool in your gas tank. If you do, be very careful not to get it on the paint.

Many injectors do have serviceable (replaceable) baskets. I had them re-placed on my 87 Cav RS. SHOZ123 that looks like it is referring to third gens, do you have anything on first?

Detenator: Try cleaner if it doesn’t work you can get them sonically cleaned at many shops, I’m not sure about the price though.

Sorry my cds only go back to '92 which has the identical info as what I posted except for the refrence to the 3.0L and 3.4L Duratec motors.

agree 110% with advice pass by station during or shortly after delivery. EPA is extremly concerned about what leaks out of gas storage but cares less what leaks in. as a convenience store auditor/inspector for 15yrs would like to add a couple of points. if pump is very slow, stop and go elsewhere [pump filter may need changing]. look where tanks are and are they placed so rain will flow away from fill covers [a litte water doesn't hurt but with water comes sand]. make sure pumps appear to have been maintained [if they are well kept on the outside the internal filters on the pumps are probably changed regularly THANK YOU Ricky

DETONATOR,

Re. fuel system/injector cleaner, ditto above.
At the recommendation of several of the forum members I have tried Berrymans B-12 injector cleaner. I am now a believer. It works great.

Re. how hard is an injector to change?

You have to remove the intake plenum/manifold, which means also draining some coolant. Then, the fuel rail has to be loosened enough to slip out the offending injector. Before removing the injector its electrical connection has to be removed.

The injector is held in by a friction fit in the head, and the fuel rail, with an "o" ring on top
and bottom. Be careful not to damage the "o" ring, as they are a little difficult to find if you need a replacement.

If you decide to have the injectors cleaned, which is not a bad idea, then remove the bolts so you can lift up on the fuel rail and remove all of the injectors.

It would be a good idea to lable the electrical connections to the injectors as the original lables are most likely gone or disintigrated. YOU DO NOT WANT TO MIX UP THESE CONNECTIONS!

If the black coating on the intake manifold gasket is not chipped or broken, you can put the manifold back on without replaceing the gasket. Otherwise, replace the gasket.

Torque everthing back in its place, and Wha-Laa, you're ready for the coolant and more happy motoring. A few nuts and bolts, and a little thought and patientce! Go to it! rangerj

PS Find another mechanic. Your mechanic may be well intended, but he is ill informed.

I was just wondering, becuse only 96-99 has the Engine options you listed. 3.4L Duratec?

I checked the '92 CD I have and it sates the same info. And yes the V8 is a Duratec motor.

Around here in Illinois we have alcohol at 10% almost every where in every grade. It does do an excellent job of keeping the injectors and areas directly hit by the fuel spray clean. Doesn't do anything for the secondary valve or above the injectors though. But neither would any injector cleaner for that matter.
