I have taken the intake plenum off on two different occassions without changing the gaskets. Could this cause a vacuum leak? The reason I ask is because my MPG is down to 17. I usually get a city and hwy average of 22-25.

I would say if you've replaced them recently (2-3years) and they are holding up visually, then no you wouldn't need to replace every time. If you don't know the history of the car or cannot attest to the treatment of the gaskets, then start fresh with a new set.

As far as the bad MPG, you might be having other issues like bad o2's. I would start by checking your codes to see if any red flags go up before replacing anything.

I'm sure others will post suggestions.

The paint on the gasket was chipping a little, so that might be the problem.

I have already changed the O2's but I can't check the codes untill I install a new anti-slosh module. It's part of the ELFW located on the back of the gauge cluster.
