DIS Location?

Hello all.. I've lurked for a wee bit and am def. a noob. I have a question I've been pondering for a bit, and I've not seen a specific answer to it. Please forgive me if it's been discussed already.. So why is the DIS located on the intake manifold. I;ve read some things about cooling, and I certainly believe that, but is that the only place it can be mounted? It seems like a person could find a location that is NOT on the engine, for instance. ( PS I don;t have and SHO car.... just an engine)

They have been mounted in different places with the engine in a different vehicle and I think i've seen 1 or 2 mouinted elsewhere in a modified SHO. The problem is the wiring harness clips on each end are only so long so you would have to elongate all of those and find good grounds for the module. As for originally why...probably space and accessibility.
