hey can anyone tell me the major differences b/w an 89 and 91 mtx as far as.......well, everything? we have one of each and we are looking to make one of them perfect with parts from the other if possible..... the 89 is missing a tranny and is a little rusty, the 91 drives fine except a little grind in one of the front wheels and is minus one back window and stereo, also got wet inside from rain. what do you think? also, does anyone know how to figure out the keyless code if you don't have it? thanks for the info-

cody

I'll tell you what I can.
Keyless entry code is found in 3 places. In the owners packet on a little plastic card. On the inside of the trunk lid, usualy near the locking mechanism. On one of the amps, behind the backseat. Remove the black cardboard thing at the back of the trunk and look from there.
89 v 91.
91 IMHO alot nicer car. Motor and Tranny are the same. Cosemetics are the difference. The dash is different, changed in 90. With the dash change came alot of little changes, vents, heater/ac control, speedo etc ...
91 had 16" non directional slicers rims, whereas the 89 had basketweaves.
91 had antilock brakes, airbags, drivers and passenger I believe was optional.

If you are looking to build a rocket the 89 is alittle lighter, due to not have antilock brakes and airbags.

On one of the amps, behind the backseat.
That 'amp' is actually the remote keyless entry module.

If the label is missing or unreadable, you can still figure out the factry default. Check out the FAQs at www.shotimes.com and look at the article about changing the default code.

I read you question and thats the exact same thing i am in the process of doing right now. there haven't been any differences under the hood that i've noticed except one bolt on the intake manifold is 10mm opposed to 12mm; the intake silencer is slightly different.there are a few obvious interior differences but i can't say there is anything else. same wiring for the radio. all the head/fog light wiring is the same. i don't think the exhaust is exactly the same but nothing major. Good luck with the transformation and i wish you SHOenstein well. thumbs_u

on my 90 the keyless code is on a security strip inside the glovebox.

your 91 has ABS, the 89 doesn't. the 91 may or may not have a rod shifter. The 89 has a cable shifter.

aaauuuggghhh! well, so far i have shop-vac'd at least 3 gallons of water out of this car- and the smell! The leather in the backseat was a little moldy, but we managed to get that off with some Murphy's. Other than that, the only problems we have now are these: AC doesn't work (of course)- james did the converter/recharge kit but system won't take the freon. Compressor kicks on but could still be bad. Also the reason this car's window was busted was b/c the former owner (it was repossessed) came and took his stereo back in the middle of the night. we can't get the stereo we have to put sound out in the car, the back electronics got wet so that may be why? It works in the Cougar, so it's got to be the car. there are a couple of wires with plugs on them hanging back there too. we are going to look at the 89 tomorrow to see if we can get any ideas from it. what else? oh, the shifter puts the car in and out of gear w/o the clutch being in. that can't be good. we did find the keyless code, which works, so i need to do some searching to figure out the trunk code. do all 91's have alarms? this car has an alarm but the wires b/w the little horn and the hood sensor are cut, probably b/c the brain part is missing. we don't know anything about that. but it runs........oh does it run! so, thank you for all of your input, we will be working on making this car perfect for awhile so any ideas are very appreciated. squint
