Well, after getting 2 codes from the KOEO test, both indicating system lean, I decided to get some new 02 sensors for the car. Seemed logical. I had already cleaned out my IAB valve in hopes that it would help my stuttering problem. No luck there. So I replace the 02's and, voila! Stuttering stops....for about 2 weeks. Now its back and so I decided to check the codes again. SAME 2 CODES came up!! 173 and 177 both which indicate system rich!! WTF is up with my SHO!?!? Also, this time I got a code 211 which is a PIP Circuit fault. What is a PIP circuit? Help!!!

HAHA, sounds like I'm in the same boat as you. My new Ford Motorcraft O2's that were replaced a couple of months ago along with my Performance Plus Y-Pipe is throwing me a code saying I'm running too rich. Don't know what to do.

The 211 code is defined as "Ignition PIP signal was erratic or missing." The PIP (profile ignition pickup) is the crankshaft position sensor (CPS).

If your engine is stuttering (misfiring?), your O2 sensors probably are detecting an actual rich condition. There is unburned fuel in the exhaust that is causing the O2 sensors to indicate a rich mixture. The fact that it is on both banks is the tip-off to the CPS.

If only one sensor is showing rich, then it would be a bank-specific cause such as a plug wire or plug causing the misfire. If both banks are indicating rich, then there is a common cause and most likely in the sensors or processors. The erratic or missing signal from the CPS could cause this this apparent random cylinder misfire.

The part is not: Wells SU242, AutoZone.com $42.99. For the MTX, you only have to remove the upper and lower (after the damper) timing belt covers. Remember to gap it at .03" from the sensor vane.

Actually, the PIP sensor error is the cam position sensor OR the crank sensor, I believe.

I say this because we've had PIP faults that were covered by changing the cam position sensor (and if you look at aftermarket sensor descriptions, they usually say "PIP Sensor" rather than cam position sensor).

Just a 2nd opinion...

FWIW, PIP stands for Profile Ignition Pickup. I got the same code last time I checked my car (I also got a SPOUT circuit open code, but that's another story). I changed my leaky water pump right after I got my car, but didn't replace the CPS, so I'm guessing it's time to replace the thing.
