Ok, I have a question here. First when I was learning to drive, at this point the sho was 8 or 9 years old. I was sitting in the turn lane and there was a gap and my old man shouts go so I did(n't). My foot went to the floor and the car rev'd, hoped and then CRUNCH, and just a grind. Well that was the first transmission and then the car sat till i was 16, 6 months or so. Now when i got the car i was drivin around and i saw my buddy in his comaro and wanted to show off, the light went green and this time the same thing happened, only when i put the car in park it was grinding....My question is. Why if the passenger side CV joint gets sheared off or breaks or w/e like it did in my case does it not still drive with the Drivers side axle? Also, after that incident the shifting got worse, it sputtered and then finaly died again and a brand new trans had to be put in. Is it just me or are the ATX's really fragile?

The short answer to one of your questions is that the open differential in our cars sends the same amount of torque to each wheel. No torque can be developed in the broken driveshaft, therefore no torque is transmitted to the good axle either = SHO no go.

Did you break a CV joint or grenade the differential?

As far as the ATX trannies being fragile, I would say they are. But if you drive reasonably and keep up with fluid changes, the tranny can last a long time. My car gets driven fairly hard, but not abusively, and has 120k on the original tranny, which is in decent shape. Mobil1 ATF has given it a new life for the past 20k or so.

the first time the trans just kinda blew, the second time the cv joint sheared and then like 2 months later the tranny acted up and then the thing just died.
