cut coils

Has anyone had luck with cutting the stock coils to lower their car? If you have how much did you remove?

Not a good idea because the factory coils aren't that stiff to begin with. They will lose allot of strength and make the car very uncomfortable to drive. Now cutting coils on springs such as the Intrax(1 maximum) or the MOOG cargo coils(1-2 maximum) is a different story. Both of these springs are for sale and don't cost more than $250 a set. If you are good at online research you can find them for almost half that cost. My opinion is don't do it. You will regret it.

Exactamundo! That was my point. They weren't quite low enough for me, so coilovers(Groundcontrol) were called in with the assistance of some Konis. Wait till it is back together. It will be like a limbo contest, How low can you go?

All it will do is succesfully destroy the rate of the spring. You will bounce up and down like you dont even have struts.

Ask me about cutting, heating, and doing the most ******** things to distort a car that you can imagine. Ive done it all. Good thing the cars I was doing it to were Demo cars.

If you really want your car lowered, get some intrax springs. I saw them new on Ebay the other day for 100 bucks.

If you cut dead coils you won't affect the spring rate, only the ride height. Cutting coils other than the dead coils is not advised.

And where would those dead coils be, top or bottom?

A dead coil is a coil that touches the adjacent coil all the way around. So it's not adding to the spring action. Typically these coils are there just to provide a flat surface for the mount. Whichever end it's on, that's where you cut.

The drop in the ride height will just be the thickness of that coil.

cut the top of the front Moogs, cut the bottom of the rear Moogs.

i lowerd my car and it rides almost stalk no bounce and it doesent scrape that bad for the sub frame only being 3 inches off the ground but then again my suspension is not stock yellow sho can vouch for the ride of my car

I cut 1.5 coils (dead coil) off the front of my Moog coils, and I love the way it rides and handles. No bottoming out and a great ride.

Close, but the dead coils that are solid when installed have about 1 inch of space per coil when free standing. It takes some amount of force to compress them which gets shifted to the rest of the spring if you cut that coil out. I think it might be only about 150-200 lbs per coil though.

The "dead" coils and the coil right next to them that goes solid when the spring is compressed further may be what makes it progressive. I was thinking that cutting all the close spaced coils out may make the spring more linear, and stiffer, which might be good for a track car. It would probably make the car too low though, it might be necessary to add some height to the spring mount.
