Long question short: How critical is it that the camshaft seals be 100 percent flush with the back of their range? I pressed the frontmost seal in with little difficulty and some taps with a block of wood using the 2" PVC method. I repeated this procedure on the other two, more difficult, seals though it wound up being more prying than tapping the seals in due to clearance issues. The second camshaft seal back from the front of the engine sat approximately 0.25-0.5 mm farther forward in a few locations than the first seal I installed. The third seal (behind the CID) on the other hand I am not even sure is fully seated as it is well disguized in the deeper recieving area. I estimate the seal is about a centimeter into the recieving channel. How critical is it that all of these seals be pushed 100% of the way in. How have some of you made sure that they are fully seated? I greased them up well but it is a TIGHT fit. Reading older posts I saw lots of suggestions as to how to remove the old seals, but little info on how to determine if new seals were properly seated.
Finally, when removing the old seals I may have, in several locations, scratched metal parts that were BEHIND the seals using pick tools. I am sure that the Camshafts themselves were unaffected. Will this cause leaks? Sorry for seeming a little paranoid, but after spending so much time getting to the seals and finding ALL of them leaking...I want to get it right. Input would be greatly appreciated as I plan on continuing my front 60 tommorrow evening. Thanks!
On a side note, i am very excited to drive the car after this service is performed, i was impressed with its performace before I did anything, and things were in pretty rough shape under the hood (may never have been serviced before) :burn_out:
