Crankshaft Seal Replament and Sensor issues

So I was in replacing my crankshaft seal and CPS sensor when one of the screws holding the sensor in place broke off when I was removing it. I cannot get it out and am going to have to drill it out and use a screw extractor. Easy enough, however I can't get my drill in the compartment to perform the procedure. Anways, I am trying to remove the cover that holds the crankshaft seal, but I can't seem to break it loose. I feel like I am missing something with it. I removed the 4 bolts on the face of the cover and the 2 bolts from the oil pan that go into the cover. I have also used a puller and started to seperate it from the block, but only the right side wants to move. The left side acts as if there is still something holding it in place. Can someone that has done this before please help me out on what I need to do to break that cover loose to remove it? What am i missing? Any help would be great at this point.

from what you are describing it sounds like you are pulling the oilpump assembly off.drop the tools go on line or lookin a manual BEFORE you go any further,the oil pump pickup is also attached to the girdle or a main cap(dont remember ) inside the engine,it will not come off without dropping the pan and unbolting it.also if you have a dremel tool try cutting a slot in the cps screw and try a flat tip screw driver to remove it.here,s a good link that might help,most of the info you need is on page 2 http://www.shophoenixproject.com/lower60k/lower60k.htm:salute:

Thanks for the reply. I have searched for hours online and have two manuals and I have found nothing regarding this cover. This is the cover that gets you into the oil pump. So I need to drop the oil pan to get that cover off? The problem i have now created for myself is i have already broken the seal for this cover. I have a full gasket set to replace them, but I am now committed in getting this off to properly reseal the cover. Is it really as simple to just drop the pan to get this out?

the oilpump is a gearator type pump housed in that cover.The pick up is bolted to the lower half of cover and to the windage tray toward the rear of the engine.you have to drop the pan to unbolt the pickup then the whole pump assembly slides off the crank snout,sorry i could only find a pic in my ford shop manual,nothing on line

you are half way there to dropping the pan,after you get the the o-2 sensors unplugged ,drop the y-pipe n cats,pull the starter,unplug the low oil sensor in rear of pan ,take the lower engine/flywheel cover off,pan bolts,pull the cranktiming pulley off,unbolt sump or pickup from oil pump housing n your all good!!!o whoops drain the oil first:woo-hoo:

The crank seal and the CPS both attach directly onto the oil pump...itself.

You are doing major work on the car by removing the pump....you might as well do your rod bearings if you are pulling the oil pan.

You'll need a new oil pan gasket, oil pump gasket, and pickup tube to oil pump gasket. I hope you also have a Helms manual.

You do not need that "cover" off to get the seal off and install a new seal - you simply pull the old seal off and tap a new seal into place.

The old seal is typically removed by drilling a couple of small holes into the side of the seal, and threading in a couple of metal screws into those little holes. Then, you pull/pry on those screws to pull the seal out. No need to take the oil pump apart or off.

if your going to drop the oil pan, you may want to consider doing the rod bearings. pretty easy task once you have the cats and pan removed

I think he wanted to pull the oil pump to remove the broken CPS bolts.once you break the oil pump housing loose you need to replace the gasket or risk a oil leak.I concur with doing the rod bearing,might as well while your there.If you need any torque specs let me know or go to sho phoenix

Thanks everyone for the help. I think I will replace the rod bearings while I am in there. Might as well do all the stuff i can so i don't have to do it later.
