I really dont want to mess around with this so I called a few shops and people are giving me a quote for around $338.00. the shops all have quoted me around $206 just for the sensor. I know autozone uses wells brand. Is that a good known brand or should I stay away from it? It is only $80 there. It has a 2 years warranty. Also what are the odds that the sensor went out just because it went bad and not because coolent dripped on it. I dont see a leak but im going to put cardboard under the car and let it run for awhile just to make sure. I dont want to pay alot of money to fix this and have the new one fail. Thanks

I just got mine new from autozone for 62 bucks. Its not too hard to replace just got rent a harmonic balancer puller and you will be all set. But i am also curious about the leak. My CPS took a shit (this is a original unit that came on my 3.2 that had been sitting for 4 years part of which i believe was outside) and well i replaced the water pump and the crossover tube o ring and i was told if the waterpump was leaking on it i would be able to tell. It looked dry, just alot of timing belt dust. sorry for the hi jack

Don't need one of those. Just get the bolt off, then you will be all set.

Not true , you cant always just pull them off once the bolt is out. most of the time you will need to use a puller unless its recently been takin off. Id rent one if you dont own one ( but its a good tool to have for 25$ )

Actually im doing mine now with the new 3.2 in the car. Your hardest problem will be the crank bolt, there are ways to get it off you just have to be patient. I have a 3/4 air impact wrench that would not take off my crank bolt, the started bump method failed, then i toon map gas too in and heat it up really hot and then sat a ice cube on the head of the bolt. The tempeture difference realeases the grip and then my impact took it off like it was nothing.

Ok, all i have is a cheap harbor freight impact, i have no torch and i dont need a new timing belt or water pump because they were replaced but i somehow forgot to replace the cps sensor when i had the engine out. I'm not taking any chances plus the shop will have it done in under three hours.. I would wait until i have my new clutch but low on money and i dont have garage space right now.

If the water pump was replaced and is not leaking, the chances of a CPS failure are low. If you are not seeing any indication of a problem, IMO you are better off to leave it alone and save your limited funds for other projects. My 2 cents

The thing I'm wondering about is if coolent was leaking on the cps sensor woudn't it die on a regular schedule? It cuts out at various times. sometimes it runs for 30 mins sometimes it will run for 5 . and then restarting is the same. I didnt see any coolent leaking but then again wouldnt it get trapped inside the lower timing cover since there is a seal on it? Im sure it wouldnt take much for it to malfunction. Im sure my mechanic will let me now if he finds water in that area. Then ill have to shell out another $100...

Yeah, the leak is pretty unnoticeable until the timing cover is off.

I just did this a few months ago. The job is fairly moderately difficult, just takes a while.
The harmonic balancer puller is a must for the sprocket, but I found that a torch to get it back on was unnecessary - I just covered it with a cloth and used a rubber mallet to tap it back in. No damage done.
The whole task (including draining the coolant to change the water pump seal) took a couple of hours.

I think the hardest part was positioning my c-clamp to compress the timing belt tensioner to get the belt off. The clamp kept slipping off, took me probably 45 minutes of creative thinking to position myself in such a way that it wouldn't slip off while I was tightening it.

Also, the CPS is fairly inexpensive. Certainly not $200. I got a Motorcraft one from RockAuto for ~$46 + shipping.

Personally, I wouldn't pay 340 bucks for someone to do it for me.

My advice is to at the very least replace the CPS,timing belt and waterpump.
The increase in labor should be minimal.

cps changed and no sign of leaks.. Old cps was dirty as can be and the wires were fraying somehow.. all is good and only cost $100. i found a great mechanic. one less headache for me.
