The last week or so the indicator on my temperature guage barely makes it to the "L"
mark on the guage after the sho is warmed up.
Previously, it would rest between the "R" &
"M". From previous posts on the forum, I guess the thermostat and/or sending unit is the culprit. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Get yourself one of those "laser" style thermometers. Or find a mechanic who has one. With the car fully warmed up, point that sucker at the thermostat housing....it should read fairly close to whatever your thermostat is rated....I have "calibrated" my temp gauge using that method.

Rob-So you think it could be the temperature guage itself, that it might need
recalibration? Another thing though, my mileage appears to be dropping, based on fuel guage readings, so I thought it was because the engine hadn't fully reached normal operating temperature because of malfunctioning thermostat.I could be wrong, thanks for the suggestion.

It is most likely the thermostat since it has the only moving parts of the components you mentioned. It is also the only one I have had to replace in over a quarter of a million miles.

Sounds like a t-stat to me. Get the Ford PN E9DZ-8575-B. The jiggle valves face upwards. Takes about 20 minutes to replace. There are a few writeups on shotimes on how to replace it.

How cold has it been in boston lately? I'm in Toronto, and I've recently replaced my thermostat. If I'm driving at city/highway speeds, my temp stays around the "L" in normal. But if i park it for a bit or am driving slow for a period, the temp moves up into the middle of the range, and the fan comes on as usual. It's been around -2 C here the last few weeks (about 28 F). Don't know if this helps, but I just thought I'd let you know.
