i don't know if anyone else's SHO does the same, my cooling fan only turns on when the needle is above the O in the temp range unless i put the a/c or heat on. would there be a way to make it turn on earlier or maybe get a bigger fan or maybe two fans?

My MTX did the same thing. The thermostat kept the needle at the "A" or above; and the temps checked out so all was ok. Don't take that gauge as gospel. Your car could be just fine.

HopefulSHO is right. The stock gauge is not to be taken very seriously. As long as you are out of the red zone all is well.

From the Ford CD.
Normal operation and cycling of the engine cooling fan will cause the temperature gauge indicator to read between the mid-point and upper portion
of the temperature gauge scale. The slightly higher indicator reading will return to mid-point when fan operation begins.

Now as you temp sender ages it will vary is accuracy from OEM specs.

Back in Michigan ... again.
Your cooling fan is working a-ok normal. Every MTX I've had cycles the cooling fan around that same spot, and with an aftermarket temp gauge on my old 93 I was amazed to find that sometimes the factory gauge would move higher while the aftermarket gauge read the same. And according to the aftermarket gauge running between the O and R was in the neighborhood of 212-215 degrees, and that's a LONG way from overheating.
