Noticed a funny noise on shutting off the engine. Scraping/grinding sound. Quickly traced to the rad fan. Haven't looked it all over yet, but it sounds like a bearing or motor gone bad.

I did a search of the Forum already. It turned up a couple of options:

1. NAPA BK 6551807 (doesn't show on their web site as being for the SHO, at least not the MTX)
2. www.Flex-a-lite.com # 114 (no indication it is for SHO, no knowledge of them)
3. www.alfitz.com - a dead link, apparently

Search of Autozone and Checker yields nothing solid either (Autozone shows something, but I am not confident it is correct)

That covers all my local parts sources except dealer (haven't checked yet), but I expect if they have it/can get it, it will be the full fan assembly and will be $250-300, based on the search results I saw. Ford Parts Network doesn't it show it listed.

All of the search results were at least about a year old and may not be available anymore, I guess.

Ideas? Sources?

I will look into local motor rebuilders but am not hopeful. If it is just brushes, I might get lucky, but do not know yet.

This seems to be the repair year: Steering rack, tie rod ends, lower control arms, turn signal switch, now the rad fan, and I'm wondering if I need a new wheel bearing or two.... Ug.

Before you do anything , cheak the brushes. I had to fix mine a couple of months back. I was going to buy a whole new fan motor from Ford. It would have cost me around $500 canadian  ( I am not joking ). My friend took it apart and saw that the brushes were gone. I went to an alternator or starter rebuild shop ( I forgot which one ) and they sold me the brushes for $20. Still not cheap for brushes but much better than $500. The fan is running well now. So before you do anything take the motor apart and cheak those brushes. If you have to buy a new motor it will not be cheap and it will not be easy to find ( well here in Canada their not easy to find ). Good luck. :thumb:

Mine went out a while back. I bought a 16 inch round cooling fan from Summit Racing for around 90 dollars. I've had no problems.

Thanks, guys. I need to rip into it this weekend and find out what the problem is for certain. Today it didn't make any noise. Now I'm wondering if it was just something stuck in there. I'll figure it out Sat for sure. If it isn't just some debris stuck in there, I will check brushes, bearings etc.

Thanks,
Dave

You can get one from a 90 or 91 Thunderbird SC.
Bolts right up and has two speeds.
Autozone for 99.99
