I recently installed a K&N cone filter on my 98. Last night the SES light came on. Is there a correlation. The engine is running beautifully.

No I didn't use a MAF adapter plate. What is that?

I've got a 98 as well and didn't use a MAF either.
It's a plate/device that screws onto you MAF like the stock air box did and allows you to put a cone filter on easier without having to screws holes into your cone filter and what not. Did you remove the MAF all together? The MAF is the square looking device with the rectangular(sp?) clip that has wires coming out of it that goes from the throttle body to the stock air box. If you removed that than you need to put it back in and get a MAF adapter or make something.
It kinda looks like this (bottom left item).
I made my own MAF adapter and got the SES light. It was "System Too Rich" and I tried everything to fix it and finally gave up. I know that SHOZ123 has a good setup with the cone in the fender well. He's had it there for a while with no problems. I know that the cone under the hood sucks in all the hot air from the engine and will eventually give you poor performance (at least I noticed it), but I LOVED the sound of the secondaries opening up!!!!
I know that on V8SHO.com they show you just ziptie'ing the IAT (input air temp) sensor. I did it EXACTLY like they showed and I got the SES light right away (a day or so). Hopefully you can just unplug the battery like SHOGHOST said and be done with it. It didn't work for me though, and I wished it would have. I know that many others have done that and had good luck. If it doesn't work for you than I have to say that you may end up in the same slump that I was in and just ended up putting a K&N panel filter into the stock air box and hooking it all back up normally.

Yeah when I unplugged the battery all it has done is reset the SES light. I believe that the car is still running rich in cylinder 1. That is what the computer told me but i dont want to take it to the shop just yet.

Yes, I removed the entire MAF per the instructions from V8SHO.com so I could mount the filter to it. It took 4 days to get the SES light. I did as SHOGHOST suggested and the SES light went out. I agree that it seems sluggish especially at low RPM's, but I like the sound and response when I get on it at highway speeds. If the SES problem persists then I will go back to the stock air box with a K&N panel filter. I had a K&N panel filter in my 94 SHO and didn't notice any difference in either sound or performance. Besides the cone looks way cool!

never got an SES from my cone filter, used to have it right on the MAF, now mine's in the fender as well. one thing you can do, rotate your MAF so that the wiring harness and black box on the side of it is on top. 90* should do it. that way the MAF sensors are positioned in the area of the slowest flow of air. its supposed to work better that way.

Mcgilles, how do you keep the cone filter from moving and flopping around in the fender with just the 4inch aluminum ducting connected to it. Also did you enlarge the whole that leads to the fender in order to get the ducting through it.
