Hello everyone.

I wonder if I can put 225/50 16 92W or 225/60 16 98H on my 98 SHO,
It now has 225/60 95W tires on it. I wonder if the 60ies will fit in the wheelcase and are their other issues that qualify this as a DONT?

Thank you for your help!

The 60s will fit. There may be minor rubbing issues.

But they turn the car into a doggyer dog that what it already is.

The 50s do the opposite. But the wheel gap is atrocious with the OEM springs.

Don't put H rated tires on a SHO. That's just mean. The 60 series will probably fit, but will be hideous in every aspect. They will look hideous, they will make acceleration hideous... and honestly, if you don't care about acceleration, why did you buy a SHO?

Tire Size

When I got my 99 it had new 225/60/16 tires. It rubbed enough going over humps in the road, that I changed over to 225/55/16. No more rubbing.

The factory size works fine. If you go to a larger wheel, you need to do some shifting, but if you are sticking with the factory OEM rims, the 55/225 size is the right one to use. You can, depending on the particular tire model and manufacturers recommendations, perhaps go to 235, but I do not think anyone makes a 16 inch in 245 anymore that can take the OEM rim width. Once you switch to a 17 inch rim, the choice gets wider. Pun intended, of course. ;)

You can run 245/50's on stock rims. I had Kumho Ecsta ASX's in that size on chromies before, but they had noticeable sidewall flex in cornering.

Worth looking into. My memory could be off on this as it was back when the car was new, but I think you needed to go to the 245/45, with the shorter sidewall, to get the circumference right, plus, the shorter sidewall helped stiffness as well. At the time I did it, only Bridgestone made a model in that size that the manufacturer indicated could be used on a 6.5" rim safely. That would be the thing to check on the Kumho's before trying it, though, particularly since Kumho is known for slightly softer than average sidewalls. You could end up with way to much flex. But I am fairly sure that the Kumho internet site would give you the range of rim sizes, for their various 16/245s, so you should be able to check it easily before buying, regardless of which brand you go with, the Kumho's Danial mentions or the Bridgestones. Plus, there may easily be others that make these sizes also.

Tire size.............225/55.......245/50
Overall diameter...25.74"........25.65"
Speed (MPH)........60.00........60.23

I'm not saying I'd recommend it, but it can be done. The Kumho's were rated for 7" or wider rim FWIW.

Close enough that it would not matter, IMO. :)

Only being manufacturer recommended for 7" would be a worry for me, however. I remember at the time it was hard to find anything that wide and with lower sidewalls that would have 6.5" for the OEM rim in the suggested safe range. The Bridgestone was one close to alone, IIRC. I think it was a model 910 back then, but again, it was some time ago, so I am not really positive.

What about a good set of z rated tires for the V8? I'm looking at Michelins' super blacks that always stay black due to their high silicone content. But really what is the best street/ touring tire the SHO loves?Im a fan of Michilins and Rikken's Raptor series.

Go to tirerack.com and look at their test results and reviews for 225/55/16 tires.

I just bought some 225/50ZR-16 Kumho Ecsta MX to put on 7" rims. Any input on these?

Hmm, the MX's have a 220 teadwear rating versus the SPT 320, both AA/A Trac/Temp, and the MX's are 2lbs. per tire lighter than the SPT's. Only $17/tire more expensive, too...

I might just get the MX's instead of the SPT's I was going to get.

Stephen, I was very happy with the ASX's I ran for three years. Great treadwear, dry and wet traction, and low noise. Good Snow traction for an A/S tire and relatively lightweight.

Yes they would last 25k or so I would think. Seeing as I have two sets of tires and really don't drive the car that much I'll put up with it. Back in the day I had some Firestone Z50s and they only lasted 15K or so.

Kumho has some 320 treadware rated tires too but I wanted something under 300.

The MXs are supposed to be good tires, but they have been out for a while and might be somewhat outdated compared to what else is available now.

FWIW, in my experience with Kumho's, they seem to wear alittle faster than what they are rated at. Granted driving habits and conditions play a huge role in the mileage.

I'm running these and while they do have a high wear rating they are alot softer. I do like them though, alittle soft sidewall but since my suspension is on the firm side (to say the least) it's nice having a soft-ish tire for the streets. They don't do so bad in the corners either.
