I've only had this car for 3 days and I love the **** out of it but when its cold or even sat for at least a few hours it has problems starting. It will start right away and rev to around 2 and then immediately die. It will do this 3 or 4 times and then start and run normally. Also the electric fan doesnt seem to be coming on although that one i'm sure i'll figure out soon enough but the starting problem is boggling me already. Any ideas?

You need to clean your Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) mounted on your intake. Remove it and clean it internally. You very seldom need a new one, but if you do, they are about $90.00.
A less likely culprit would be your throttle position sensor, but move to it if the IAC cleaning doesn't work out. They are about $40.00 and if it is bad, you need a new one.

When you turn the key to run (without starting it), does the CEL (check engine light) come on and stay on? It's on the right of the cluster, dead center.

I was thinking maybe the bulb was burnt out or pulled, making the engine run in Fail Safe mode.

There are a few things to check. Give me a few, I'll go snap a few pictures to see if I can help point out the area's to check

First, let me apologize about the sorry shape of my engine bay. I know it looks horrid, and this spring it's going to get fixed. Just too much snow and crap around here for me too keep it clean.

And also, I'm writing this assuming this is your first SHO. I'm pretty new to the SHO world, and thanks to the help of many SHOForum members, I have learned a lot!

Here's the engine bay

This is the Idle Air Bypass, and the vacuum hose.
Here is the cleaning procedure. http://www.shotimes.com/php-bin/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0&sid=82

This is the vacuum controller for the secondary butterflies on the intake. If this isn't working properly (has a hole in it, loose hose, ect), the secondaries stick open all the time, causing a lot of issues below 4000RPM. Search the forums, there are some really good ideas on there on how to troubleshoot it.

Also, pull the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, blast that with electrical contact cleaner, same with the throttle position sensor.

Wow thats alot more help than I expected. And yes this is my first SHO and so far buying it was a decision that I dont regret at all. From everything i've read here it looks like maintenance might be a common thing to deal with but its ok. I will try these things as soon as I possibly can (its very cold here right now and that tends to rush me and I dont want to rush and screw something up). I really appreciate the pics and as soon as I try these things I will let you know the results. Thank you very much.

Hey, I bought my first SHO in October 09. The knowledge I have now is from tinkering with it, but mainly from searching and asking questions on here.

A lot of people here have a lot of great answers!

And yes, there is a lot of maintenance that needs to be done to these, to keep them running right. A lot of people buy these SHO's, beat the holy **** out of them, then at the first sign of trouble, sell them. That's how I got mine so cheap.

Bookmark that page, there is a TON of useful information on there.
http://www.shophoenixproject.com/upper60k/upper60k.htm
Upper 60k Walk-thru - Very helpful if you need to remove the intake. But, once it warms up outside, consider doing the entire upper 60k. It will help out a lot with the engine.

Remember, SHO stands for a lot of stuff, **** Happens Often is my personal favorite. But, when it runs right, and you punch it, listening to that V6 start screaming from idle to redline, downshift then do it all over again makes all the busted knuckles worth it!

The help you're giving me already is amazing. Really building my confidence in keeping this car for years. I've loved the look of the SHO for years but thats as far as it went. I knew nothing about them. About a month ago I saw one sitting at a car lot here in town that literally never sells cars. Its a one man operation with no advertising. So I knew if I liked it I could probably get it cheap. And being i've always been a Ford person I decided to take it for a drive. After listening to the salesman tell me how long it had been sitting and it had no battery and wouldnt for a week because he would be out of town I figured it had alot of problems. But I waited and finally it had a battery. Within the first minute of driving it I knew I wanted it. But I took it out for a while and ran the **** out of it like I would anything on a test drive and the power of the V6 amazed me. So I took it back and asked how much and he said $1000. Now it sits in my driveway. Thats of course when i'm not finding an excuse to leave with it for a drive. (Without my wife thinking i'm leaving for suspicious reasons). I do realize that with it sitting for so long theres a long list of things I need to do and thats ok because i'm willing to do it. I already love it that much. Ran the carfax and it turned up all positive. Spent most of its life in California. And it will spend the rest of its life here in Kansas. Ok i'm rambling on now. But already I could talk about this car for hours on end. Again thanks for all the help and I will be in touch.

Search how to do the idle reset procedure. When the new battery was put in it most likely was not done. Do the other things that were recomended first. Then reset the idle.

Where in Kansas are you? I live in Wichita. If you need any help, just ask.

Hutchinson. I'm assuming the white SHO in the pic is yours. Thats a beautiful car. Mine is green and while I have no complaints about it...I do wish it was white with black trim. Good to know though that there is someone here only about 40 miles from me. How long have you had yours?

Yeah Kansas can feel like some sort of prison from which one cannot escape for some. But I was born and raised here and i'm 32 now so you could say i'm used to it. Anyway guys I cleaned the idle air valve today and no difference. And it was very dirty. Everything inside was black. I happen to have a friend here that manages O'reilly and he is getting me a new one for 50 bucks so i'm going to take the risk. If that doesnt do it then i'll move on to the TPS. Strange thing happening here though...I've had alot of cars in my life and with every one of them when there was a problem it irritated the **** out of me. But not with this one. I already get it. When you truly love these SHO's problems can be part of the joy of ownership. Putting money into this car doesnt bother me at all. I always wondered before having this car why some people loved a Taurus so much. Now I understand. I already get more joy out of this car than the Camaro's i've had in the past. And unlike the Camaro's it hauls my kids around easily and doesnt have a damn bowtie on it.

Its a love/hate relationship and right know its being mean to me. You just have to show it who the owner is. These car are also jealous of one another. Ask LJ_Rudy in KC.
