Question for the guru's. In some cars adding a cold air intake/ aftermarket intake, can be bad for the car without
a tune (mazda speed 3) for example. Why is the SHO able to accept the upgrade without a tune? Dose it not affect the air fuel ratio or force to run lean with the weak fuel pumps in this platform? Just trying to get more educated about the SHO. Thanks for any feed back.

a) the OEM intake is impressive to begin with, and
b) the PCM will adjust for whatever air is coming in

Gains are primarily at the top end, 3500+ rpm anyway to be noticeable at all.

The big restriction is the downpipes, which still do not REQUIRE a tune, but you are definitely blowing money out the tailpipe if not tuned.

So, just do a dropin K&N if you really want a performance gain, or add a K&N CAI if you want extra sound. Don't expect performance to improve on the street, but on the track, a tenth in the quarter mile.

In the old days of speed-density fuel injection, any change in air flow would alter the air-fuel mix and the ECM would have to be recalibrated.

These cars use MAP sensors so that the computer knows exactly how much air is getting in, so it can perfectly adjust the fuel.

I recently put a K&N CAI in my 2016, and the throttle response is slightly improved, and I hear the turbos a lot more.

The Mazdaspeed 3 uses a maf setup so increasing to a larger diameter intake, throws off the maf calibration. If your looking for an intake for the SHO I would look into the new afe one. It’s a nice piece, comes with a air box and cover. When moving my iat’s average about 2 degrees above ambient. But it doesn’t get much of a woosh sound.

Probly another good reason to run the colder thermostat. Checked oil while filling up last night and the dipstick and oil was very hot. Could feel the heat though the rag. Temp. gauge looked fine.

Check out one of our CAI units I have one on my own SHO and love it!

The Windstorm adds a new air intake tube constructed of cross-linked, high-density polyethylene that is designed using extensive computer modeling to maintain proper mass air flow readings and calibration. This system also has a built-in velocity stack, which further promotes airflow. What this all means is a simple-to-install system that was designed using extremely sophisticated technology to increase airflow while maintaining proper air/fuel ratios, therefore eliminating the need for recalibration once installation is complete. Just bolt it on and go
