I f I had one or more coil packs going out, what would be the symptoms?

Right now I am getting an intermitent miss when at stop lights, where the car will shutter for a split second -- almost like it is shutting down for just a half a second. It happens so fast, I don't even notice an rpm change/drop, and it does this about every 5 - 10 seconds. Also the gas mileage in the last couple weeks has drop significantly. Hwy mileage has gone from about 27-28 mpg down to 19-20. when I am on the gas the car runs fine, maybe a slight loss in power.

The car has 93k. I bought it with 79k, so I don't know the prior service records, but I do know it was one owner, women driven, and properly maintenenced.

Thanks for the reply. thats exactly what I thought it was -- I just wanted to make sure before I went throwing money at it.

So where do you guys recommend for parts store where I can get a reasonable deal on replacements, and should I replace them all right away -- also, is this something they would do when I take it in for its 100k -- which it is going to be going in a little early anyways?

Where were you taking your car for the 100K? How soon?

Regardless for your miss the Ford dealer canrun a power balance test with the WDS (World Diganostic System) and you will know exactly which coil(s) are the problem.

They will charge their standard diag fee (75 - 110 depending on where you are) but you will not have to guess at which coil is the problem and you would only buy as many as the test indicated you need and install them.

If you know where your car is going for it's 100K you may want to call and see if they have a WDS and if they would do the coil for you when they do the 100K s they will already have the entire intake off anyway (in the likely case that the bad coil(s) are in the rear).

I had a slight "miss" prior to having my cams welded.
After removing the rear surge tank we tested all the coils and could not determine which of the 8 were bad.
So we made a "corporate decision" and replaced all 4 in the rear ($67 each at Murray's includes tax & shipping).
We "chose wisely", as now the engine purrs nicely and we have 4 extra used coils for the front as needed.

General opinion is that Murrays on line has about the best price for coils. I don't see where you have thrown location codes though. Try a couple of hard starts in 2 and see if you can at least get the code(s) telling you exactly which coils are *****.
