Okay so I'm going out in the SHO tonight despite the SES light on and no fuel gauge. It has at least 3/4 of a tank of gas in it so, no worries there. I decided to check the code with my new scanner and came up with a PO1409 which is something to do with exhaust gas recirculation solenoid or something. Really surprised that this was the only code it had after all these years. So, has anyone ever had this code and what do I do to fix it? Thanks for any suggestions. 7876cd734b2749a6b10e8cee2ecf0d9935213bf09dd671dfa1fd5ccbd1d03ce3

All that stuff is probably mostly blocked by the intake on the GenIII. What a PITA to have to go back and forth trying to eliminate issues and having to keep taking the surge tank off the back. Sorry dude. Transverse mount sucks in those small spaces.

Yeah, changing the plugs and coils on the back side of the engine is a really pain but not as bad as some other vehicles. When I replaced the valve cover gasket on our 2006 Nissan Quest, I had to remove all of the cowling, windshield wiper motor assembly and a few other things in order to get to the valve cover, that was a lot of fun.

I just pulled a quest image. That is terrible. When I had to do my first sparkplug replacement on my '14 f150 I was so amazed at how easy it was to get your hands on almost everything. Good luck and post back on what's what with the repair.

Great news!!! I had a chance today to check out the EGR solenoid on the car, found it and discovered that it was disconnected. I guess that when the transmission shop put everything back together, they overlooked connecting the EGR solenoid. I found the little plug and connected it up, cleared the code, started the car up and no codes!!! So, that was an easy fix. Also got the fuel gauge working again. While out for a test drive, I started yanking the steering wheel from side to side and it apparently freed up the fuel gauge sending unit and now it is working again. Yay!!! Two easy fixes and the car is doing great so far. I've got to put about 500 miles on her and take her back to the shop so they can check it for leaks. So far so good!!!

Do you still have original EGR sensor? Replaced mine a few years ago after dealing with similar code and as I recall, the new part was "improved" and had the hose connections @ 90 degrees from original, such that it was a bit of a strain to keep them on (there wasn't much available slack in the rubber hoses). Removing cowling allowed enough access but it was still tight.

As far as I know the EGR solenoid on my engine is the original but it is working fine, it apparently wasn't connected back up when the shop installed the transmission a few months ago. I'm not getting any codes now, no SES light anymore.
Only issue at the moment is the fuel gauge which was stuck is now reading like there is a full tank of gas and I know there isn't a full tank. I don't understand how it would do this if the gauge is controlled by a float, it shouldn't show a full tank.

I've heard rust can be an issue. Here is a picture of the float from my '96 last year before I put the high flow pump in.

Not sure how the car would react to an open circuit vs a short in the float wires...

So to be clear, did you replace the entire unit and if so, what did you use?

I was only providing the image as a reference of how it was setup.

I actually just reused my stock housing, no issues with the float as you can see no sign of rust. Both my SHO's work equally in providing me feedback on the gas level.

I did have to modify the housing a bit to make room for the aftermarket rubber vibration dampener. It makes the pump about 10mm taller.

I don't have an image for the final install at the moment. Have a video somewhere of it.

Okay, I misunderstood. What puzzles me though is this, the float is what controls what the gauge shows right? If so and a gas tank is not full, how or why would the gauge be able to read "full" if the float that controls all of this is floating around in a tank that is half full? I'm so confused!!!! I guess I just need to bite the bullet and get a whole new assembly and be done with it.

Many MANY moons ago, Carter (Arkansho) had some wire chafing going on in the wiring loom on top of his gas tank. Had to drop the tank, repair the wires, and added extra corrugated insulation if I recall correctly.

Never was the float or sending unit.

This trouble was mostly for 96 year as Ford put for the next years a soft sheild on the wires (TSB for 96).

Right, the problem is likely an open circuit or short to ground.

Open Circuit is like disconnecting one of the wires.
A Short circuit can be like E1 describes above that one of the wires is exposed and either touch another wire or the chassis which would ground out the signal.
