Hey everyone,

I'm still getting used to driving a stick full-time again, but the clutch on my SHO slips really badly when starting from a stop. If I don't give it too much gas at first, it will grab and hold tight, even if I then go WOT. If I try revving the engine and letting the clutch out, it will slip until I lower the RPMs. The guy I bought it from said the clutch had been replaced right before he bought it, and the problem might be a throw-out bearing, but he hadn't looked at it.

It's not really a huge problem at this point, in fact it's making it really easy for me to knock the rust off my stick skills without giving myself wiplash :nut:

Thanks.

I dont understand how it slips. When Jay had that car the clutch was not slipping in Any way shape or form. The only problem I noticed with that car was SOMTIMES it was a tad difficult to get in to First gear. But the clutch did not slip.

Jay was very forthcoming about the car when I talked to him, he told me that he didn't know how a SHO clutch was supposed to feel (neither do I), but he told me that he suspected something was wrong with it (he suggested that the TOB might be installed backwards or just a worn clutch).

It can be a tad difficult to get into 1st, I let it slip into first just as I roll to a stop and I have no trouble at all.

Looks like I may have found the culprit, my rear subframe bolts have about a 1/2" of grip length showing between the head and the bushings. Needless to say the car is down until I can get some recall kits installed.

Could this have caused a misalignment of the engine and transmission which could result in odd clutch behavior?

Oh well, the Dart was getting a bit dusty anyway.

1: You said it yourself: you are learning how to drive a stick again, how do you know it is slipping?

2: Try this: drive about 55 in 4th then floor it....does it slip then?

3: Its pretty hard (read: impossible) to install the TOB backwards...one would have to be pretty out of it do do that. Not to mention how much noise it would make as it ate your clutch fingers up.

1: I'm still quite competent with a stick, it's just been a while since I drove one as a daily driver. Compared with my dad's Nissan Sentra, the SHO's clutch is nowhere near as tight. I can rev the SHO to 5000 and pop the clutch, the RPMs will remain constant, and the car will very slowly start rolling forward. The Sentra would try to break my neck if I did that (and if the car failed, my dad would probably succeed if he found out I was abusing his car like that).

2: It seems like once the clutch is engaged, it will stay that way, ie, driving 55 in 4th and gunning it, it does not slip.

3: Thanks, I haven't done much work on stick shift cars so I didn't know about this.

Try power shifting to third instead of second. If your RPMs stay up and it makes a smooth shift, your clutch is toast.
