I went to my auto parts store to get a quote for clutchs. I own a 1990 sho. When they looked it up they found these two clutches for the car...

Autospecialty Clutch by TR NEW CLUTCH KIT (LATE- CAST IORON COVER - MATCH TO ORIGIONAL) 299.99

Autospecialty Clutch by TR NEW CLUTCH KIT (EARLY - STAMPED STEEL COVER) 199.99

How do I find out weather my SHO is a late or early 90's car. I didn't know there was a difference. Could the early clutch posibly be made to the specs of the one that Ford had origionaly recalled?

Thanx for any help.

Good question. I guess the difference could be what size flywheel you have. I would get the larger clutch and if necessary upgrade the flywheel if the smaller one is still in use. You could always try to cross reference with 91-95 clutch kits to see if that's where the difference is.

Ford changed from a 9.25" clutch to a 9.75" mid year in '90. They also recalled all the 89-90 with the 9.25" clutch and retrofitted them with the 9.75". The 9.75" clutch has a cast irom presure place housing. Most likely you have the 9.75" clutch, if not you should switch (you would just need to change the flywheel also). Look in the drivers door jam for the date of manufacture sticker to find out when it was made.

If you are looking for a stock replacement clutch, try here:
http://www.1stfordparts.com/
Search for p/n F1DZ-7A537-A

This is OEM ford part, and will cost you ~$200. Forget the aftermarket, BTDT. If you need a TOB, go to Josh, SHO Nut.

Edit: I think the recall was done on virtually all 89-90 SHOs, to upgrade to the larger clutch. Only way to tell is to pull the starter and look at the pressure plate, sort of a PITA but there you are.
